Air fryers are kitchen game changers, slashing the cooking time down to a minimum – but also producing some mouth-watering food in the process

Air fryers can make foods crispy without the need for excessive amounts of oil. But did you know you can make extra crunchy chips with fluffy middles by adding just one simple ingredient?

In just 20 minutes, you can create the most delicious and crunchy homemade chips. Using cornflour as the secret ingredient, these chips will be golden and crispy on the outside, yet fluffy on the inside. What’s more, by using an air fryer, you’re using far less oil compared to traditional frying methods, making them a healthier alternative.

Just don’t forget to interrupt the air fryer from time-to-time to ensure your chips are cooking evenly, not burning in some areas, and over-stacking, preventing them all from baking at the same time. It can be tempting to fill the entire drawer with a huge portion, but this can prolong the process – as some wedged in the middle may not cook at all.

Ingredients:

  • Potatoes
  • Salt and pepper
  • Oil
  • Paprika
  • Cornflour

Step-by-step instructions:

  • Prep the potatoes: Start by peeling the potatoes and washing them thoroughly to remove any dirt. Once they are clean, cut the potatoes into long, thin rectangles or the classic chip shape, depending on your preference.
  • Coat the potatoes in cornflour: After cutting, toss the potatoes in cornflour. This simple ingredient is the key to getting the chips extra crispy. The cornflour forms a light, crunchy coating that gives the chips the texture when cooked.
  • Season the chips: Once the potatoes are coated in cornflour, it’s time to add the seasonings. Drizzle a small amount of oil over the potatoes and toss them until they’re evenly coated. Add salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of paprika for a bit of extra flavour. The paprika adds a smokey colour to the chips.
  • Air fry the chips: Preheat the air fryer for a few minutes before adding the coated potatoes. Place them in the basket of the air fryer, making sure they’re spread out evenly for the best results. Set the air fryer to a temperature of around 180°C (350°F), and cook for 20 minutes. Keep tossing the chips halfway through the cooking time to ensure they cook evenly and turn golden brown.

Once your chips are crispy and golden, remove them from the air fryer and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. They’re perfect as a side dish or a tasty snack!
