The M11 has was closed in both directions due to a police incident, with drivers now being told to expect several hours of delays.

Emergency services shut the motorway this afternoon between junction 6, heading towards the M25 Junction 7, and Junction 5 for the A1168 Chigwell Lane.

All traffic was being held temporarily. The incident happened on the northbound carriageway, but the road southbound also remains closed while an air ambulance attends the scene.

Authorities were made aware of the incident at around 2.35pm, with the nature of the incident not fully known yet or how long people will face delays and queues.

Essex Police confirmed a man has been seriously injured after a crash on the M11 with the road being closed in both directions.

A spokesman for the force added: “A man has sustained serious injuries and is being treated by paramedics. The road will remain closed in both directions while we work with emergency service colleagues to make the road safe Disruption is expected to last for several hours.”

The M11 northbound has now reopened apart from one lane following a crash earlier on Thursday.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “The M11 northbound is now open in both directions between J4 and J6 (between A406 Woodford and M25 J27).

“The Essex Roads Policing led incident is ongoing – lane 1 northbound remains closed. All other lanes have re-opened. Delays in the area are approx. 10 minutes above normal.”
