While many people will be reluctant to keep their radiators on all day, there is an easy way to make your room heat up twice as quickly and maximise your radiators

As the temperatures drop, people will be starting to put their heating on – and there’s a simple way you can make the most out of your radiators with this easy trick.

With energy prices still on the rise, many will be reluctant to leave their heating on for too long, but there is an easy way you can heat your room twice as quickly, especially if you have a radiator next to a window, and the added bonus is that it’ll take just two seconds.

While a radiator next to a window usually isn’t the most cost-effective, there are ways you can still maximise your heat, as revealed by window shutter specialists at California Shutters.

The experts said many people are making energy-wasting blunders and shutting the heat out from their radiators rather than putting their radiators to their full potential. While it may look cosy to have your curtains drawn and hide away from the miserable weather, it’s making your rooms much colder and can waste a lot of heat that is getting blocked out.

As reported by The Sun, the experts said to maximise radiator efficiency, we should tuck our curtains behind the radiator or fold them onto the windowsill. “When we draw our curtains over a radiator, the heat is absorbed by the nearest cold surface — usually the window — effectively warming up the glass instead of our rooms. And no one wants to waste energy heating their windows!”

They added: “By simply tucking the curtains behind the radiator or leaving them on the windowsill, the heat from the radiator can properly circulate throughout the room. At the same time, the curtains are also acting as a barrier preventing heat from escaping through windows.”

You can also maximise radiator heat with another clever trick as explained by insulation expert Michael Wray of National Insulation Supplies. He said you can keep your home toasty despite the rise in bills just by adding foil to the back of your radiators and, in turn, could slash up to £200 off your heating bills.

He advised: “Adding large pieces of foil, which can be purchased as little as £1, to the back of your radiator, will reflect your radiator’s heat back into the room. The hack is even cheaper if you have aluminium foil already in your kitchen.”

The science behind this trick is that aluminium foil is an ‘excellent’ heat reflector, so when it’s placed behind a radiator, the foil will reflect the heat back into the room rather than letting it escape out through the walls. The foil traps the heat, which will make you home feel warmer and reduce the need for excessive heating.
