The BRIT Awards red carpet always promises some iconic looks – with celebrities making huge statements with their jaw-dropping outfits which have made history over the years
Some of the biggest stars from across the world’s music industry are heading to the O2 Arena in London for this year’s Brit Awards as the red carpet is ready to be rolled out.
With some big-name stars already confirmed for the Jack Whitehall-hosted event, this year’s red carpet is hoped to not disappoint with celebs such as Sabrina Carpenter, Charli xcx and Dua Lipa poised to show off their outfits for the special event. Since its first ceremony in 1977, the awards have pulled together some of the biggest names from the music industry for one, often messy night in London. With all those big names some iconic looks have been born, standing the test of time for the glamour – or, in some cases, lack of.
One of the most legendary outfits of any awards show came in 1997 during a now infamous Spice Girls performance. Having been reproduced thousands of times in fancy dress form, Geri Halliwell sent the world into a frenzy with her Union Jack dress that went on to become the poster for Britpop.
Years later, Ginger Spice revealed the legendary outfit wasn’t made from some designer bespoke material – but a souvenir tea towel sown onto a plain dress.
After being the talk of the world, a year later Eurythmics star Annie Lenox was back with her own take on the Union Jack outfit. Reuniting for the occasion the Scot performed in a full red, white and blue suit in a nod to Halliwell, but this time over a bedazzled shirt rather than the novelty tea towel.
Moving into the 21st century and 2015, the ‘Queen of Pop’ Madonna took to the stage in an impressive matador-inspired outfit. The piece notably included a huge sparkling red and black cape supposedly resembling that of the Spanish bullfighter.
Although impressive, the cape caused a horrific wardrobe malfunction leading the 56-year-old to be flung across the stage tumbling down some stairs. Being the star she is, she managed to get up and finish the song in front of a cheering crowd, but the outfit will always be remembered for the wrong reasons.
Five years later, Lizzo took to the red carpet in a look that is still talked about as she brandished a chocolate bar-inspired dress produced by luxury fashion house Moschino. The look included a dress, clutch, and nails that matched the chocolate theme with a Hershey-inspired graphic running up the piece.
The singer described the look as being “the best kind of chocolate” also posting to social media a short video in which she jokingly pretended to eat the clutch purse.
One outfit not to be forgotten came at last year’s event when Rob Beckett took animal print a bit too literally. The presenter and comedian brandished a giant inflatable giraffe costume complete with boggling eyeballs and brown hooves, with just his arms and legs poking out.
The comedian wasn’t just attempting to be a fashion disaster but instead lavished the look to promote his tour titled Giraffe although that didn’t stop the comparisons to legendary Toys R Us mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe.
