Sir Sajid Javid is set to take up the role at the London-based firm after calling time on his career as a Conservative MP

Former chancellor Sir Sajid Javid is set to join the ranks of asset manager Centricus as a partner, following his decision to step down as a Conservative MP.

The London-based financial powerhouse, where Sir Sajid has been serving as a senior adviser, confirmed he will take on the new role from July 8. Sir Sajid announced earlier this year that he would not be contesting his seat again come July 4, drawing the curtain on his tenure as the MP for Bromsgrove in Worcestershire since 2010.

His departure marks one among over 130 MPs from the 2019-2024 Parliament who have opted out of the upcoming General Election, with 75 of them being former Tory MPs smashing the post-war record.

The ex-chancellor, who held the purse strings under Boris Johnson’s leadership, received a knighthood in the New Year Honours list. Before diving into the political arena, Sir Sajid cut his teeth in the world of investment banking, climbing the ladder to become vice president at Chase Manhattan Bank by just 25.

He later moved to Deutsche Bank in London, tasked with expanding its emerging market operations, and eventually rose to the position of senior managing director before bidding farewell to the finance sector in 2009 for a career in politics. On his new appointment, he said: “I am thrilled to join the team at Centricus.”

He added, “I look forward to contributing to our mission of driving growth and creating long-term value for our clients through innovative and strategic solutions.” Centricus, established in 2016, specialises in advisory services, private equity, and asset management, with a portfolio managing upwards of $40billion (£31.6billion) in investments.

Dalinc Ariburnu, co-founder and partner of Centricus, said: “We have benefited greatly over the last year from Sir Sajid’s advice and guidance. We are delighted that he has agreed to join our partnership and firm on a full-time basis. We look forward to further benefiting from his in-depth understanding and experience in global markets, international business and global geo-politics to help guide and execute our firm-wide strategy.”

Sir Sajid Javid, with an illustrious track record in government, held six cabinet positions and was the first British Asian to occupy one of the great offices of state. His political journey saw him take on the mantle of home secretary, chancellor, and health secretary, as well as vying for the Conservative leadership on two occasions.

It was his dramatic departure from Boris Johnson’s cabinet, alongside Rishi Sunak, that triggered the downfall of the former prime minister. Previously, in 2020, Sir Sajid made headlines with his sudden exit as chancellor after a clash over his advisory team.
