The Star Bar in Glasgow serves up a three-course meal that is priced cheaper than a McDonald’s Big Mac meal – and Gary, the seasoned food reviewer behind the Gary Eats YouTube channel, went to check it out
A pub known for having one of the cheapest three-course meals in the UK has garnered attention from food critics.
Viewers have been left “emotional” after a Scottish bar’s three-course meal deal for just £4 was featured by the seasoned restaurant reviewer behind the Gary Eats YouTube channel. With over 35 years in the industry, Gary tours the UK to sample and critique eateries.
The Star Bar, tucked away on Glasgow’s southside, has bagged an impressive 4.5-star rating on Tripadvisor, and, according to Gary, it’s well-deserved praise. His first course, a “wholesome” vegetable soup, came without any bread to dip in it, but Gary said that was fair considering the entire meal costs a mere £4.
“If I made this at home, I’d be proud,” he commented while savouring his soup, labelling the price as “absolute madness”. The chicken casserole, a favourite among the Star Bar’s regulars, also got Gary’s thumbs up.
He lauded the dish as “hearty and warming,” perfect for a cold day, although he joked: “My only complaint is that I wish there was more, and the reason why I wish there was more is because it is so tasty.”
He pointed out that a McDonald’s Big Mac meal could set you back around £7 these days, stressing that unlike the fast-food giant’s offerings, “this is proper cooking”, reports Glasgow Live.
The Star Bar may primarily be a pub, but its commitment to affordability extends to its drinks too: a pint of Guinness is priced at £3.95 and lager at £3.25, rates that are significantly lower than many city bars.
The Star Bar’s kitchen boasts a delightfully retro charm, complete with a pudding option that harks back to simpler times just good ol’ jelly and ice-cream. Gary reflected on his culinary experience, touched by how it whisked him back to the days of his youth.
Wrapping up his glowing critique, Gary enthused: “I think what they’re doing here for the locals is fantastic.”
This sentiment echoed widely across social media, as one online user stated: “Fills your heart there are still places in the UK that still support their community.”
Another connoisseur chimed in: “They definitely deserve a 10/10…got quite emotional watching that. To put themselves out and probably make a loss just to help those that are down on their luck is so so rare in the world we live in. Well done to The Star Bar! “.
One more highlight was its affordability, as a commenter noted: “You could feed 2 parents and 3 kids for £20. And its decent home cooked food. Couldn’t even get a McDonald’s for that.”
Gary’s review received numerous echoes of approval, with scores of comments monikered as a “Totally heart warming tear jerker”.
