According to a coin collecting expert, this trio could be “found in your change” but only if they come with certain details
An expert has urged people to check their wallets and jars for three rare British coins that combined could be worth as much as £3,000. According to a high-profile collector, this trio of coins could be “found in your change”.
However, in the case of two of them they must display some specific errors, or they won’t be worth much. Speaking on social media platform TikTok, an account known as the Coin Collection UK explained: “These three coins are worth three thousand pounds and can be found in your change.”
Firstly he told people to look for a £2 coin from 2014. This coin was designed to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War.
It features an image of Lord Kitchener. The coin collector continued: “There is an extremely rare error on the Lord Kitchener worth £800 pounds. You need to check if yours doesn’t say the words ‘£2’ on the back – this is the error.
“It’s called a mule error and very few have been found collectors will pay hundreds for this coin at auction. The normal one is worth £2.”
Next he told people to look for a 50p coin. This was designed to celebrate the 2012 London Olympics and bears a child’s drawing of a high jumping athlete.
But you need the 2009 version for it to be worth a lot of money. “The Olympic athletics from the Olympic series can be worth over £200. The rare version is dated 2009 on the back.
“Less than 20,000 of these were sold. Collectors will pay up to £250 pounds for one in great condition. The 2011 version is worth £2.”
Finally, he advised on another Olympic coin worth far more than its face value. “This time the aquatics, which can be worth £2,000 plus.” This coin from 2011 features an image of a swimmer.
But it is only valuable if the lines depicting water go over the swimmer’s face – something that was changed in later versions of the coin. He added: “The rare original one will have lines covering the face like those on the body.
“Very few of these were minted and they sell for crazy money because of this. Always check any of these if you find them.”
