One of the special sketches on Friday’s Comic Relief Red Nose Day was a mash-up of mystery series Beyond Paradise and comedy Not Going Out, thanks to actress Sally Bretton starring in both shows
Actress Sally Bretton stars in both Beyond Paradise and Not Going Out, and her two TV worlds collided on Friday night in a special crossover episode for Comic Relief. Sally plays Lee’s wife Lucy in Not Going Out and Humphrey’s girlfriend Martha in Beyond Paradise, and took on both roles for the sketch that featured a mix up of mistaken identities.
Her onscreen partners Lee Mack, who plays Lee in Not Going Out, and Kris Marshall, who plays DI Humphrey Goodman in Beyond Paradise, joined Sally. Zahra Ahmadi also appeared as Esther Williams from Beyond Paradise, and there were more familiar faces from both shows throughout the sketch.
Fans loved the crossover mini-episode. “The Not Going Out/Beyond Paradise sketch is more the kind of minisodes Comic Relief should be doing. Brilliantly done,” one fan commented, while a second said: “lol that was enjoyable!” A third wrote: “Now that was more like it! Not Going Beyond Paradise has so far been the best part of the night.” A fourth added: “This part has been the best so far.”
Sally chatted about filming the special episode when it was announced. “It was great fun to have the two worlds collide, play my own doppelganger and get swept up in the madness that comes with that! It was particularly special to be doing it all for such a brilliant cause as Comic Relief.”
“The sketch was filmed at such high speed, we didn’t know if we were coming or going. I don’t know how Lee Mack holds all the moving parts in his head. We all had a great day filled with fun, confusion and belly laughs.”
Kris Marshall, who plays her Beyond Paradise husband, added: “It’s always a delight to be able to combine the joys of comedy with the ability to help the many worthwhile charities that Comic Relief supports. And that as a part of the hilarious mistaken identities and sliding doors pastiche in a melange of two of the BBC’s most beloved shows, I can be a small cog in this year’s wonderful evening of fun, frolics and fundraising.”
The next series of Not Going Out is currently filming, and the third series of Death In Paradise spin-off Beyond Paradise is back on BBC One on Friday 28 March, at 8pm, immediately before the season finale of Death in Paradise at 9pm.
In an interview with The Mirror, Sally revealed where the new season of Beyond Paradise picks up for her character Martha and husband Humphrey.
“They’re in a really good spot together,” Sally says. “They’re very busy but happy.” Martha has her hands full this season as she relaunches her restaurant Ten Mile Kitchen, unaware that her mother Anne is set for a huge obstacle of her own this season. Adding drama to the intrigue, Martha’s ex-fiancé, Archie (Jamie Bamber), makes an unexpected return – this time with a business proposal.
Red Nose Day for Comic Relief is on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 7pm, and on BBC Two from 10pm on Friday 21 March.
