Conor McGregor has lost a huge bet after Robert Whittaker and Max Holloway were beaten by Khamzat Chimaev and Ilia Topuria at UFC 308, with the Irishman losing $500,000
Conor McGregor lost $500,000 (£385,000) after betting on Robert Whittaker and Max Holloway to win their fights at UFC 308.
McGregor bet on both Whittaker and Holloway to win by knockout and he would have banked more than $17million (£13.1m) if the pair had won. He said: “What’s up, guys? ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor here, live from the big yacht.
“Sitting down, lying down, chilling, watching the fights. Ladies and gentlemen, here are my picks for the evening. Max Holloway, Robert Whittaker, KO victories. Max Holloway inside the first half of the fight. Robert Whittaker inside the second half of the fight. Half a million US dollars.”
However, Khamzat Chimaev submitted Whittaker in round one of their co-main event contest. Holloway, meanwhile, was brutally knocked out by Ilia Topuria in the third round as he successfully defended his UFC featherweight title.
And McGregor has defended his betting record, with this latest loss coming just one week after he lost another $500,000 (£385,000) by backing Renan Ferraira to knock out Francis Ngannou when he returned to MMA.
Ngannou ended up beating Ferraira by knock out in the first round, with the former UFC heavyweight champion enjoying an impressive PFL debut. “I won $7.7m million (£5.9m) in gambling profits this year,” McGregor wrote on social media.
“Spain to win the euros, $1.1m (£848,000) win. Diaz to win, $1.6 (£1.2m) win. Argentina to win copa America, ‘1m (£771,000) win. Spain, Carlos Alcarez, Argentina treble on the day of the games, 100k (£77,000) bet won me $4mill (£3m) win.
“I lost golden boot 63k (£48,000) in euros, I lost Ferreira last week 500k (£385,000) and 500k (£385,000) tonight. $1.63m (£1.25m) losses, $7.7m (£5.9m) wins. $6m+ (£4.6m+) I am up now today as it stands.

“Here’s the thing, you can take the conventional odds on favourites to win, and yes they should win, and you get your baby pay out and be happy, but to think that bet would have returned me $17m+ is outstanding.
“If you look at the odds from a point of view like this, at 500k to return 17m off of just two fight predictions, well doable, you have 32 times to hit the bet and still be happy! 32 shots at the wheel for that payout. Food for thought, my gambling aficionados.”
