The doctor said that you need to eat the snack just before you drink
A doctor has revealed the snack you need to have before you go on a night out. Speaking on TikTok, Dr Neena Chandrasekaran, a specialist in pulmonary and critical care medicine, said that the snack – which is loved my many – is ideal due to it being high in protein.
Posting under the username @neenziemd, she shared that these are “things they don’t tell you” about alcohol and your stomach. She explains: “If you are going for a night out on the town and you’re going to drink alcohol, eating cheese before drinking alcohol can decrease your risk of having a hangover.
“This is because cheese has a lot of protein protein, fat, and complex carbs that can coat the stomach which decreases the absorption of alcohol. Cheese can help the body metabolise alcohol better and prevent liver damage.
“Cheese also replenishes nutrients because it is full of B vitamin and calcium. These specific nutrients are depleted from the body when drinking alcohol.”
In addition to the vital nutrients we need, she notes that calcium can also be “depleted through alcohol” helps ad it specifically aids in improving nerve and muscle function. Not only that, but vitamin B is “needed for energy metabolism,”
Concluding her helpful video, she warned: “Just remember, no alcohol is better than any alcohol. However, if you are going to drink and try to remember to try some cheese before alcohol.”
What causes hangovers?
According to Harvard Health, “the causes are as varied as the symptoms. Alcohol is metabolized into acetaldehyde, a substance that’s toxic at high levels. However, concentrations rarely get that high, so that’s not the complete explanation.”
In addition to this, they also back up the doctor’s claims that vitamin B is key. Discussing hangover ‘cures’, they say: “A study published in The Journal of Clinical Medicine evaluated the diets for 24 hours before and after excessive drinking occurred.
“It was a small study and results were based on the participants saying what they ate. However, they did find that people whose food and beverage consumption contained greater amounts of zinc and B vitamins had less severe hangovers.”
