Inter Miami owner David Beckham is seemingly ready to try and tempt Xavi to the United States after the former Barcelona star was overlooked for the Manchester United job
David Beckham wants former Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez to take over as Inter Miami’s new head coach.
It emerged earlier this week that Inter Miami’s current manager, Tata Martino, is set to leave the club for ‘personal reasons’ in the aftermath of their failure to quality for the MLS play-offs.
And while that has yet to be officially confirmed by either party, it seems Beckham’s MLS franchise are already working hard to bring in their dream choice to replace Martino.
Xavi is among the candidates being considered to take over, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo. But there are plenty of other high-profile names in the running, too.
The report has helped shed further light on the situation, including that Martino will announce his resignation in a press conference on Friday alongside Inter Miami’s top brass. They state that Xavi is among three top candidates for the job, alongside Javier Mascherano and Sylvinho.
It’s noted that Xavier Asensi, the general manager of Inter Miami, is the driving force due to his strong links with Barcelona. Xavi, for example, was a long time team-mate of Inter’s star player, Lionel Messi, at the Nou Camp.
While another outlet says various others names – including Frank Lampard, Erik ten Hag and Jurgen Klopp – have also been mentioned, Xavi is an intriguing candidate given his recent links elsewhere.
The former Spain international is still unattached after leaving his role with Barcelona at the end of last season and he emerged as a contender to replace Ten Hag at Manchester United as recently as last month.
His appointment could appeal to Messi after Martino recently sparked doubts over his future after admitting he was unsure how long the Argentine superstar planned to stay in the MLS.
Martino said of Messi: “I actually don’t know how limited [Messi’s time in this league] is. There is a question of time passing, but I would not dare to say that it is so short.
“If you look at the context in which this began, it seems to me that the progress of the club is important. The comparison of the last game of last season, back in October, with today’s third game in the playoffs and this bitterness that we all have for not having progressed, is clear that the club’s objectives have been modified and I think there is no reason for the club not to continue trying next year.
“What happened this year, the bad and the good in general have been better than everything that happened last year and I would say even from the entire life of the club.”
