Tottenham have now suffered 13 defeats in the Premier League but they’re still in three cup competitions and under-fire Ange Postecoglou has stressed his belief the team can do “something special” despite their lowly position

Tottenham star Dejan Kulusevski has insisted the team will “fight” for Ange Postecoglou, who he believes is the “right man” for the job despite the team’s woeful form.

Spurs have slipped to 15th in the Premier League after back-to-back losses against relegation-threatened sides Everton and Leicester City, leading some fans to call for the Australian to be sacked.

Tottenham have now suffered 13 defeats in the Premier League with 15 games still left to play, but they’re still in three cup competitions and under-fire Postecoglou has stressed his belief the team can do “something special” despite their lowly position.

Kulusevski, who has been Tottenham’s stand-out star with nine goals and eight assists, agreed with his manager’s words as pointed out that Postecoglou had the team playing “beautiful” football earlier in the season.

“Yeah I agree with him,” the Swedish international said. “Three cups, we’re doing really well in the cups. I think we can do big things in these last four months.”

After being pushed on why he felt Postecoglou was the right man for the job, Kulusevski added: “Because we had games where we showed perfect football and football not many teams can play in the world. We played beautiful against [Manchester] United, City away 4-0 and yeah we’re behind him. I have to fight for him because I believe in that football too. Yeah, he is the right man.”

Postecoglou will switch his attentions to the Europa League as Tottenham play Elfsborg in their final match of the league stage and he responded to a question asking him about “angry Spurs fans” amid the team’s torrid run.

He reiterated his belief that the team could still be successful this season and promised his staff were working hard to stop the rot. Speaking to the media, he said: “My message would be to all Spurs fans because I represent them all not just the angry ones that you are referring to or maybe talking to. All Spurs fans. We are working hard to turn this around.

“Obviously we know the situation, notwithstanding the fact the possibilities and opportunities in the second half of this season are still very much in our hands to capitalise on and still make it a successful season.”

Postecoglou has been boosted by the return of Mickey van de Ven following a lengthy hamstring injury and said the Dutchman would play some minutes against Elfsborg. His usual centre-back partner Cristian Romero needs longer to recover, while James Maddison will be out for two to three weeks.

“Micky is good,” he added. “He is good to go and we will try to get him some match minutes tomorrow. That’s the plan. Let’s see how much we can get out of him tomorrow. He has a good week/10 days training with the team and is in good condition so he is fine.
