Nile Gardiner, who has worked with Donald Trump, discussed the US President’s “secret plan,” and has praised the world leader for his activity since returning to the White House

Donald Trump doesn’t care what anyone thinks – and won’t be swayed by opinion polls – because he is “very authentic,” according to a source close to the US President.

Nile Gardiner, who knows Mr Trump through his work as a political commentator, has warned people to “underestimate him at your peril” as he stresses the US President will always “believe what he’s saying.”

But many across the political spectrum haven not believed the world leader – and this has led to criticism Mr Trump is a bully, he is unpredictable and he is insensitive.

Yet Mr Gardiner, who first met Mr Trump in 2019 during the politician’s first stint as President, said: “This extraordinary memory for names and faces, and ability to make people feel special, is part of the sharp intelligence and charisma of a man all too often vilified by his critics as a bull in a diplomatic china shop.

“His modus operandi is very deliberate, with a clear rationale behind it. By adopting the positions he does, he forces people to think outside the box and lays the ground for a deal.”

Mr Trump delivered a two-hour ramble to the Congress this week, during which he praised Elon Musk, his advisor and the richest man in the world, and took a bizarre swipe at his predecessor Joe Biden over the soaring cost of eggs.

And, during his first 44 days in office, Mr Trump has shown no regard for caution in handling the conflict in Ukraine. The nation’s leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, met the US President last week to attempt to strike a peace deal – only for Mr Trump to turf the man out of the White House.

But Mr Gardiner’s take on the handling is upbeat. The expert, who was a former aide to Margaret Thatcher, added: “While Biden, and Barack Obama before him, were cautious and conventional presidents, Trump never hesitates to get on with things and he has a clear vision both for ending the war and ensuring that Ukraine’s long-term security is guaranteed.”

In his piece for the Daily Mail today, the commentator continued: “Unlike Biden, a cynical, career politician who always seemed to be somewhat ‘plastic’, Trump is very authentic. The ultimate outsider president, he doesn’t think like typical Washington politicians and, when you’re in the room with him, you know that he really believes what he’s saying.

“That, of course, is often controversial and has won him many enemies on the Left who mindlessly attack him as an unthinking bully. If they want to persist in that misguided view, then that is their prerogative but I would offer them one piece of advice. Hate Donald Trump all you like but underestimate him at your peril.”
