A car button on the dashboard of vehicles is confusing motorists and road users up and down the country

Motorists have been cautioned about a “vital” button on their car dashboards that has left many drivers across the nation baffled.

A Reddit thread has sparked discussion after one driver posted: “What does this car button do? Sorry if it’s obvious,”. They added an accompanying photo to their post.

One user clarified, “Fog light. Not for use in light mist, haze, drizzle, sleet, overcast, wet or perfectly sunny days. Use it in fog. Somehow this is confusing for a lot of drivers.”

Another quipped, “Press that when you are being followed. It deploys a smoke screen that will allow you to disappear in a dramatic fashion. Also a rear fog light.” A third advised, “While really boring, reading a car manual will give you the biggest help with cars.”

In Britain, there’s a fine of up to £50 for misusing fog lights, which should only be activated when visibility is seriously reduced and switched off when conditions are clear.

Another Redditor pointed out, “All [cars] use more or less the same signs, so when you’ve retained what each one means (and what effect it has on your driving), it’s in your memory then. One time deal.”

“This is one of the tell me questions, so you were maybe asked on the test to show the examiner where this button is. It’s your rear fog light,” another explained.

Another chimed in: “For the love of god though please turn off your (front) high beams when other cars are approaching you.”

One person confessed: “My friend used to deliberately flick his on, at the last minute, when passing cars who left them on. I’m not sure if this would count as manslaughter if this caused a fatal accident but, since learning to drive, I can totally understand why he did it.”

The frustration was evident as another driver replied: “So inconsiderate to oncoming vehicles as it blinds you.”

Meanwhile, someone else pointed out: “It’s the brake light when the other ones aren’t working. Especially when the police are behind. Also the rear fog light.”
