Ten people have been hospitalised after a fire broke out at a block of flats in Edinburgh on Wednesday evening.
Dozens of emergency crews attended the scene which saw firefighters work for almost four hours to tackle the blaze and make the area safe.
Ambulance officials said ten people had been taken to hospital following the terrifying incident. The Scottish Ambulance Service said they had been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, but there is no word on their current condition.
The fire broke out in the ground-floor flat of a block in the city’s Niddrie Mill Crescent with emergency services arriving on the scene at around 6.35pm.
The streets were lined with a swarm of fire engines and ambulances as fire crews worked for hours to bring the blaze under control, Edinburgh Live reports. Four ambulances and three special operations response teams were called as well as three fire appliances and one height vehicle, emergency services said.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were there until 10.17pm while police remained at the scene making enquiries into the incident, the force confirmed.
The Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 6.37pm on Wednesday November 6 to attend an incident on Niddrie Mill Crescent, Edinburgh. We dispatched multiple resources to the scene, including four ambulances and 3 special operations response teams (SORT). We transported 10 patients to Royal Infirmary Edinburgh.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted 6.35pm on Wednesday to reports of a dwelling fire at Niddrie Mill Crescent, Edinburgh.”
“Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and one height vehicle and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting a ground floor flat within a three-storey block of flats.
“A number of casualties were in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and received treatment at the scene. Crews left at 10.17pm after ensuring the area was made safe.”
