If you’re looking for a getaway where the sun shines and you can explore in peace, then this town etched into the clifftops could tick all the boxes

Italy is a well-trodden holiday destination for people from the UK looking for a mix of good food, culture, sunshine, sea swims and relaxation – but some spots in the European country can become overrun with holidaymakers.

Places like the Amalfi Coast and Venice often suffer the plague of over tourism in the summer months and through to autumn as tourists leave the gloomy shores of the UK in search of warmth. But there’s one region of Italy that still sits relatively untouched by these travellers, and offers not only sun and seaside but delicious food and lively culture.

Calabria is a southern region of Italy located in the toe of ‘the boot’ and has long since been a hidden gem. This gorgeous region is glorious all year round and when the crowds clear out in the August months you can still enjoy sunny days and quiet beaches.

Tropea, one of the towns in Calabria, is perfect for people who want beaches and culture in equal measure. This jaw-dropping town is on the west coast of Italy and is famed for it’s houses built into the hilltop and expansive sea views.

One of the unmissable places in Tropea is Santa Maria dell’Isola Monastery – a fairy tale castle perched atop its own personal mountain and surrounded by the ocean. First erected as a simple church in mediaeval times, the structure has been redesigned and rebuilt multiple times, after earthquakes destroyed it in both 1783 and 1905.

The history of the church is a little uncertain, but the rock itself was likely inhabited as far back as the 7th century by Greek hermit monks. Visitors can climb the steep steps to the church and explore its gardens while marvelling at the gorgeous views in every direction.

People who have made the pilgrimage to this mediaeval church say although getting to it is challenging, it’s absolutely worth the burn the stairs will give you. One person on Tripadvisor said: “This sanctuary is so magnificent because of how it sits in this amazing setting.

“The sanctuary itself is beautiful, but the vista from there is well worth visiting. Absolutely take the time to climb the steps.

“The setting is incredible, high on a hill with beaches and turquoise waters on either side. The temple itself is beautiful as well as the grounds and views. Must see!”

Aside from its beaches and buildings, Calabria is also famous for its food. If you’ve been to any up and coming restaurant recently you may have noticed many of them now feature nduja on the menu – well, Calabria is where this delicious savoury treat originated.

The spicy sausage paste has made the jump from southern Italy to the world, much like the famed Calabrian chilli. Calabrian cuisine is hot, spicy, savoury and unmissable.

If you want to visit this region, then you’re in luck. Direct flights from the UK go daily from most major airports across the country.
