WARNING DISTRESSING CONTENT French authorities are investigating after a newborn baby was thrown from the second floor of an Ibis Style hotel in Paris, later dying in hospital
People reacted with shock yesterday when a newborn baby was thrown from a hotel window in France, with screams ricocheting around the neighbourhood.
People nearby were alerted to what was happening after hearing the commotion at around 6am Monday, and then calling the emergency services. The tiny infant was thrown from the second floor of the three-star Ibis Style hotel, off Rue de la Croix Saint-Simon in the 20th arrondissement of Paris.
Police and ambulance crews rushed to the area of the French capital and the baby was taken to hospital. Below we take a look at all we know so far about the incident which has shocked France.
Who gave birth to the little baby?
The baby was said to have been born by an 18-year-old American visiting the country with others. The tiny child was rushed to the Robert-Debré hospital but despite the best efforts of doctors the infant did not survive, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed to Le Parisien.
Why was she in France?
The teenager is said to have been visiting the French capital as part of a school study trip from America to France, with other students, when she suddenly went into labour. A magistrate from the Paris public prosecutor’s office attended the scene, along with police officers from the minor protection brigade (BPM) of the Paris judicial police, according to a police source.
The prosecution said that the teenager, is “part of a group of young adults travelling in Europe”, adding she was taken to hospital where she is set to undergo an operation having recently given birth. The Paris prosecutor’s office went on: “She was also taken into custody on site. The possibility of a denial of pregnancy is being considered.”
The prosecutor’s office confirmed an investigation has been opened for “homicide of a minor under 15”.
Baby still had umbilical cord attached
Horrifically, witnesses claimed the tiny baby still had the umbilical cord attached when thrown from the window of the hotel in France. A source close to the case told Paris Match: “The investigation is underway and the precise circumstances of this tragedy remain to be established… We do not yet know if we are dealing with a denial of pregnancy.”
