Health expert Jennifer Temple shared the “mini detox” she recommends for detoxing your liver and getting your skin to glow

A health expert has explained how having one cup of tea a day could help detox your liver and even help your skin glow. Taking to her TikTok page, which boasts 566k followers, Jennifer Temple shared the ‘detox’ drink she recommends having daily for one week, to get the best results.

Jennifer is a certified practitioner in Ayurvedic, which is a holistic, natural system of medicine that originated in India over 3,000 years ago. She is also the founder and owner of Purely Ayurveda.

In a recent clip online, Jennifer said: “Drink one cup of this everyday for one week to help cleanse your liver, give yourself a boost of energy and to reduce the toxins in your body – kind of like a mini detox. It’s just really gentle by the way.

“So this liver loving herb is called milk thistle and this is the ground version and these are the whole seeds. I personally like to grind them and here’s why; I just find if you pre grind the milk thistle seeds you don’t have to steep it for long cause those little seeds are hard and here’s how to make a simple cup of milk thistle detox tea.

“It’s not even really a recipe because it’s so simple, just take one cup of boiling water and add one teaspoon of ground milk thistle seeds, so I have a little like a spice grinder and I just grind the seeds in there but no problem if you don’t have a grinder you can just use one teaspoon of whole seeds.

“Steep for at least 10 minutes and drink that once a day – and don’t be surprised if you notice that your skin is so much more glowy and healthy looking after one week.”

What is milk thistle and what does it do?

Milk thistle is often promoted for its liver-protecting effects and is often used by people who have liver damage due to conditions like alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis and even liver cancer.

Although more research is needed on how it works, milk thistle is thought to reduce damage to the liver caused by free radicals, which are produced when your liver metabolizes toxic substances. A 2021 study showed improvements in liver function in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease who have taken a milk thistle supplement, suggesting it could help reduce liver inflammation and liver damage.

Due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, milk thistle may also be a useful supplement for people with acne.

What does the liver do?

The liver’s purpose is to break down toxins into harmless particles. A fatty liver can become heavy and enlarged, which can lead to fullness under the right rib cage and shoulder pain.

Important functions of the liver:

  • It makes bile
  • It helps convert thyroid hormones
  • It buffers excess sex hormones
  • Bile is made by the liver, and it helps you break down fat.

A lack of bile can lead to many various health problems. Bile is also very important for keeping fat out of the liver. Anything you can do to help increase bile reserves will help you remove liver fat. You may even want to take purified bile salts.
