As colder months roll in, window condensation can become more prevalent in homes – but a cleaning expert has shared a very simple and effective solution using just one kitchen item

A cleaning guru has revealed a trick to containing window condensation, stopping the growth of mould in the process.

Britain’s beloved cleaning guru, Lynsey Crombie – affectionately known as the “Queen of Clean” – has shared the nifty tip to banish window condensation using nothing more than a common kitchen staple.

Surprisingly, the solution to ridding windows of condensation lies in your washing-up liquid. This everyday item might just be the hero you need to stop condensation in its tracks.

Condensation strikes when air packed with moisture hits a cooler surface like your window, resulting in water droplets forming. But here’s where washing-up liquid swoops in for the rescue.

It puts an invisible shield across the glass, and you only need a smidgeon of it to work magic. Lynsey gave this golden tip: “Pop a tiny amount [of washing-up liquid] onto a dry microfibre cloth and rub all over the glass pane.”

She guarantees no streaks, thanks to the minuscule quantity used. The “Queen of Clean” shares her wisdom, saying: “This creates a barrier and prevents condensation. This is such a brilliant old-school tip that works so well.”

Why splash out on a pricey dehumidifier when such a simple, cost-effective alternative exists? To fight off window dampness effectively, make sure to manage your home’s humidity level – and keep in mind, draping laundry indoors may be wallet-friendly but does hike up humidity.

To sidestep the usual blunders of airing laundry indoors, Lynsey Queen of Clean suggests spreading garments on a clothes horse in an area “with good ventilation”. She advises locating the sunniest spot in your abode to air your washing by an open window.

“Close the door to this room whilst the window is open,” she further instructs. Additionally, Lynsey points out that activities like cooking and bathing can introduce extra dampness into your dwelling, so leaving a window ajar can aid in staving off condensation and the proliferation of mould.

The hack appears to work wonders with members of the public trialling the dish soap on their windows and posting their results on social media. One woman took to TikTok and displayed the results of a little bit of washing up liquid. “Look at that, no condensation on the windows,” Janine said while showing the windows, which clearly had no moisture on them.

She then compared it to her daughter’s windows, which did have condensation on them. “I’m so excited because I […] hate condensation, so this is going to be my new hack.”
