Hairstylists unveils the best way for you to try out the ‘jellyfish shag’ haircut which is loved by celebrities and why it’s just so popular amongst young people
The mullet is back! Well, a more refined and classy version of it, to be more precise. The hairstyle that once took over the 1970s and 80s returns after 50 years of rest, but it’s not at all what you’d expect. This time, it actually looks good.
The ‘jellyfish shag’ is set to be the hairstyle of the season. The popular haircut consists of a blunt, short, or bowl-cut top layer with long flowing layers underneath, mimicking a jellyfish’s shape. Celebrities like Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus even sported the fun hairstyle on the Grammy’s red carpet earlier this year.
Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga have undiably been at the forefront of the “jellyfish shag” trend. Fans couldn’t get enough when the women took Grammy’s red carpet this year and showcased their new statement hair. One fan commented on a trending Reddit post about Lady Gaga, “I wasn’t a fan of the dark hair on her Instagram posts, but this hairstyle is killing it on her.” While another added, “The hair is doing it for me.” While Miley, was praised for her stunning look, one user commented, “The haircut looks good on Miley.”

Gem Schwartz, Founder of Taylor Rose Hair Extensions, tells The Mirror how she has seen this style become more prevalent recently, especially with younger people. She said: “I’ve definitely seen the jellyfish shag starting to trend more especially among younger people who want something fun, bold, and different. It’s part of the mullet family, but with a softer, more playful twist.”
She adds: “You’ve got this rounded, almost bob-like shape on top, and then long, sleek layers underneath that give it that jellyfish silhouette. It’s not your everyday haircut, but that’s what makes it so appealing.”
With this hairstyle gaining popularity, it’s important to remember that it requires regular maintenance and styling. Advocate stylist Mike Mahoney from Josh Wood Atelier, encourages those wanting to get the cut to invest in the right products to maintain the salon look.
Mike shares,” With the styling of this look it can vary massively from the way it’s been cut to the product used.. if your hairdresser has gone all out and feather-razored your layers for maximum texture and flicky bits, then going in with a salt spray and scrunch drying could be the way for you.”
However, if you’ve gone for a little bit of a longer version of the ‘jellyfish shag’, Mike recommends using some products while you dry you hair. He explains: “Blowdry in some old school mousse with a slight 70s feel making sure you get some nice movement around the cheekbone.”
Nevertheless, hairstyles don’t always go according to plan, so be sure to communicate effectively with your hairstylist when going for the chop to avoid disappointment. Not long ago, American model and actress Emily Ratajkowski shared her unfortunate haircut on TikTok to her 2.7 million followers.
The haircut, which was undeniably botched, looked uneven and choppy on the ends, framed by a fringe that started on the back of her head. Despite the hairdresser claiming they were using a previous photo of her for reference, Emily was visibly disappointed.
She joked around in the video, saying to her viewers: “This is my worst haircut yet.” Then she revealed her brown hair to the camera. Many fans were quick to comment, adding their two cents and sharing advice on hiding the haircut until it grows out.
Despite Emily’s unfortunate experience, the haircut remains one of the leading trends this year. So, be sure to go to a trusted stylist before making the chop. Whether you’re inspired by your favourite celebrity or want a change, try out this fun hairstyle!
