Shawn Seesahai, 19, was stabbed to death by two 12-year-olds in Wolverhampton last year as his family in Anguilla in the Caribbean released balloons on the anniversary of his death
The family of tragic knife crime victim Shawn Seesahai released balloons at his favourite beach to mark the anniversary of his murder.
Shawn, 19, from the Caribbean island of Anguilla, was stabbed to death by two 12-year-olds in a Wolverhampton park last November. The teenager’s murderers, who brutally attacked him with a fearsome machete, are the youngest knife killers in UK history.
Shawn’s family are campaigning to increase the jail terms handed down to the pair by a judge in September. His parents Suresh and Maneshwary were joined by his sister Shana and family friends at Crocus Bay beach on Wednesday.
They lit candles at the spot where his ashes were previously scattered before releasing red, black, gold and white balloons. Shana, 15, broke down in tears as she remembered her beloved brother, who dreamed of becoming an engineer.
Dad Suresh said: “It is very sad remembering what happened a year ago. It brings everything back. We needed to come to his favourite spot and release balloons to keep his memory alive.”
Mum Maneshwary added: “We feel close to Shawn here. We will never forget our son, he was our world.”
The Mirror revealed earlier this week how Shawn rang his sister in school to ‘say goodbye’ hours before he was killed. He phoned her out of the blue as she sat in a classroom and told her: “Always remember I love you”.
His family believe he subconsciously knew he was going to die – and was saying a final goodbye to Shana. Shawn had travelled to the UK for eye surgery and was due to enrol at college the day after his murder.
He was attacked after one of his killers shoulder-barged him. Shawn heroically told a pal he was with to “run bro” as he was murdered by the young duo in cold blood.
His attackers are the youngest murderers since Jon Venables and Robert Thompson killed James Bulger in Liverpool in 1993. The pair, who are now 13, were both detained for a minimum of eight years and six months in September.
Their sentences are being reviewed by the Court of Appeal, but both could be free when they are 20. Shawn’s parents believe tougher sentencing is the only way to end the UK’s knife crime epidemic.
