If local cuisine is an important part of your holiday experience, this quiz will pair you to a city around the world that’s the best match for your tastebuds. The quiz comes after a poll of 2,000 holidaymakers found half have had a dish while abroad that was so delicious, they have tried to recreate it at home.

The poll found that two in five Brits have gone to ‘extreme lengths’ to recreate their favourite holiday meals. Many have visited specialist grocery stores to ensure they have the right ingredients, while 24% have watched videos of local chefs to hone their technique.

Some 20% have gone a step further and sought advice from a food expert on how to recreate a dish while still on holiday. However, only 31% are actually confident in their abilities to cook a dish as well as the local experts.

The research, commissioned by Loveholidays, discovered that Italian cuisine was the most popular choice for Brits to try their hand at after returning from a holiday. That said, 30% have given Greek cuisine a go, and 19% have tried their luck with Thai dishes.

Chef Sam Way, who collaborated with the online travel agent on the study, commented: “Authentic dishes are more than just ingredients and recipes, they’re a reflection of local culture, history, and tradition.

“The freshness of local produce, the expertise of chefs who have honed their skills over generations, and even the vibrant atmosphere of bustling markets and streets all contribute to making food taste extraordinary.

“While home cooking is a fantastic way to incorporate those flavours into our daily lives, some dishes are simply best savoured at their origin.”

Despite their enthusiasm, 64% confessed that some of their culinary experiments have been total flops. But many are determined not to give up with 15% loaded up on enough of the right ingredients to last them months of trial and error.

The survey also found that 43% have had a holiday companion taste-test their dish and compare it to the original, with 66% of these admitting it was ‘close, but not quite the same’, and 22% rating it as ‘nothing like the original’.

Sam Way further noted: “Food is about more than just taste, it’s about the memories we create as we share it with those around us.

“Whether you’re reminiscing over a home-cooked version of your favourite dish or booking your next trip just to experience it again, the joy of travel and food is something that stays with us long after the meal is over.”
