Ford is one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world, and almost everyone can pick out its distinctive logo – but there’s an odd detail that some people are only just noticing

There’s a strange detail in the Ford logo that people are only just noticing.

Ford Motor Company is the sixth-largest automaker in the world and the second-largest in the US, so it’s not surprising that almost everyone can instantly recognise the brand’s iconic blue and white logo – or can they? The company was founded by Henry Ford in 1903 and, almost 122 years later, it turns out some people are only just noticing one subtle detail in the logo.

If you’ve ever seen a Ford car, you’ll know that the logo is relatively simple. It’s a dark blue oval shape with the word “Ford” written in white in a cursive font in the middle. But, according to one woman on TikTok, there’s actually some debate about the way one of the letters should look.

Monica Turner shared a video in which she displayed two different versions of the logo – one which featured a small curl on the second stem of the “F”, and one that did not. Only one of the logos is the true Ford symbol, but Monica admitted it left her feeling confused as she declared: “This one’s weird because the more I look at it, the more they both look wrong.”

She continued: “This is one of the most recognisable logos in the world. This logo has changed over time. Sometimes it’s a much bigger oval, sometimes the colours are different – there’s red, there’s black, there’s different shades of blue. But the one thing that has always stayed the same is the actual logo.”

Monica then asked her viewers which of the two logos they thought was correct before revealing that the real Ford logo has always included a curl on the “F” – despite many people swearing that it didn’t.

She explained: “The answer is the curl. It’s always had the curl. Does it look right to you? I don’t know. This is one that I don’t know. I’m not familiar enough with it, but a lot of people are very vocal about this particular logo.”

Commenters on the post were baffled after finding out the correct answer, as many of them were convinced the Ford logo did not include a swirl on the “F”. However, a former Ford truck mechanic posted in the comments to clarify that the official logo always had the swirl, while the version without the swirl was a non-copyrighted version often seen on shirts, hats and other merchandise.

Where does the Ford logo come from?

In the early years, Ford Motor Company used several different logos and, in 1909, it settled on one based on the handwriting of founder Henry Ford. This logo did not have the curl on the “F”, but just two years later, in 1911, the logo was updated again to look almost identical to the one we now use over 100 years later.

According to Car Logos: “The Ford logo does not come directly from the signature of the founder Henry Ford. However, the typography used in the logo is based on his handwriting.

“The font was created by Childe Harold Wills, a Ford Motor Company engineer and designer who was a close associate of Henry Ford, by studying Ford’s signature and then adapting it to create a unique and recognizable font for the company’s logo.”

It’s unclear why the curl on the “F” was added, but some believe it may have been designed to look like a lowercase “E” for Henry Ford’s son Edsel Ford, who took over as president of Ford Motor Company in 1919 until his death in 1943.
