The Manchester United boss is coming under increasing pressure after the slow start to his tenure, and he says he knows what could happen if results continue to be poor

Ruben Amorim insists he is still the man to turn Manchester United around – but admitted results will ultimately decide his fate.

United take on Real Sociedad in the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday, needing to go all the way and lift the trophy to clinch a Champions League place for next season.

Amorim’s side are down in 14th place in the Premier League, but he is adamant he can make them great again, while admitting he may run out of time if results do not improve.

“I know what to do, but sometimes it’s a lack of results and you have to win games,” said Amorim. “So I know the consequences when you don’t win games. But I’m really confident, since day one. A little bit more frustrated now, but I’m still confident.”

Amoirm also said he will not compromise on his system or style of play – even if it ends up costing him the United job if results do not improve this season.

“I think the system is not the problem,” said Amorim. “It’s the way of playing. So the problem of our team is not the system. We have a lot of problems and we’re trying to work on these problems.

“But I was always really clear that I have one idea and I’m still really confident, because I have an idea how to play football.

“I will not change that, no matter what, and I’m not talking about the system. It’s about the way I see football and we are going to do it – or not. We’ll see.”

United defender Matthijs De Ligt said: “In a lot of games this season we haven’t been good enough, so we know that and we’re trying to improve as a team.

“We all know that we have to improve and this game is another chance to show our worth in a European competition.

“We haven’t lost a game in Europe this season, so hopefully we can keep it that way and get a good result.”
