The hospitality group behind restaurant chain TGI Fridays has collapsed into administration.

Hostmore, which operates TGI Fridays in the UK, has been scrambling to sell its chain of 87 restaurants – but in a new development, the firm today confirmed it has now collapsed, with administrators from Teneo appointed to oversee the process.

Hostmore hopes to complete a sale of its UK restaurants by the end of September, in a move which would keep the TGI Fridays brand alive on British high street. However, it is not clear at this stage whether a new buyer will be found for some or all of the restaurants. TGI Fridays is an American-inspired restaurant chain that first opened in the UK in 1986s. Its name stands for “Thank God its Friday” and its menu consists of New York-influenced food and cocktails menu.

TGI UK restaurants will continue to stay open as normal while the administration process starts. It comes after Hostmore abandoned plans to buy all the TGI restaurants in the US – its biggest market where it has 128 restaurants – for £177million.

It would have merged with US-based TGI Fridays Inc, to create a larger firm that would remain listed in London. The announcement of the deal falling through caused shares to tank by more than 90%. Its shares are now worth less than 0.2 pence per share. Its shares have now been suspended from the London Stock Exchange. TGI Fridays operates more than 270 in countries around the world.

Hostmore published a statement on the London Stock Exchange today, which said: “The Board inherited a very challenging set of circumstances, but a focus on reducing costs, revising the Group’s capital allocation policy and implementing both Board and senior management changes, meant that the Group was able to reduce annualised expenditures by £12million, significantly reduce losses from unprofitable stores, and operate the Group’s stores at a best in class efficiency level for the sector, all while improving guest scores to our highest levels on record.

“Unfortunately, all of the Board’s efforts to implement a lasting solution to support the long-term financial future of the business came against a highly challenging trading and macroeconomic backdrop, and efforts to create value for shareholders through the proposed acquisition of TGI Fridays, while well-advanced, encountered adverse events outside of the Board’s control.”
