Weeds are a common problem for gardeners and can quickly take over an area – but one woman has shared how she kills weeds for free using a simple trick and “without nasty chemicals”
Weeds – those pesky invaders of gardens and driveways – can be a real headache for homeowners.
They grow rapidly and spread like wildfire, making them a tough adversary in the battle for a neat garden. Left to their own devices, these unwelcome guests can wreak havoc on paved areas, causing cracks and damage that could hit your wallet hard with repair costs.
But fear not, green-fingered friends, there’s a way to halt these horticultural hoodlums in their tracks without breaking the bank or resorting to harsh chemicals. A savvy gardener has taken to the Loving Your Garden Facebook page to share her top tip for weed warfare and it’s as simple as making a cuppa.
Jessie Rothwell posted a snapshot of a weed poking through gravel and explained her free and easy solution: “Love this gardening tip I got off here, don’t bother with nasty chemicals to kill off weeds, simply pop the kettle on and give them a steaming hot bath.” She added that the method is especially effective when the weeds are parched and under the scorching sun: “It works particularly well if they are thirsty and on a hot day, this one started to wilt as I was pouring and I’ve found it kills them off better and faster.”
Jessie also spared a thought for the critters that might be caught in the crossfire, saying: “Do feel for any bugs that may be underneath but surely is better than poisoning the soil and surrounding atmosphere.” For those looking to keep their gardens pristine and eco-friendly, boiling water is a brilliant weapon against weeds, reports the Express.
It’s not only kind to Mother Earth by avoiding toxic herbicides but also gets right down to the root of the problem quite literally, killing weeds all the way down to their tap roots. Boiling water has emerged as the latest hack for battling pesky weeds, but it’s vital to handle this method with care and precision for both personal safety and optimal weed-whacking results.
The trick is simple: gardeners should start by boiling a hearty pot or kettle of water the amount depends on how many unwanted green invaders they are facing. Once the water’s bubbling away nicely, it needs to be carefully transported to the weedy battlefield. With deft movements, pour the searing liquid over the unwelcome plants peeking through driveway crevices or garden paths, while steering clear of any prized plants in the vicinity.
For stubborn weeds, a second hot shower might be necessary the following day. After they surrender and wither, the weeds are ready for easy removal. Fans of the Loving Your Garden group didn’t hold back on sharing their thumbs-up for the technique. Anne Condor enthused: “This makes for a very good weed killer, it kills weeds quickly and seems to keep them away.”
Green-thumbed Samuel Samuel shared his eagerness to try it out, saying: “Brilliant idea I’m going to be doing this on my block paving.” A few cautioned that a dead weed isn’t necessarily a defeated one and advised extra diligence. Andrew Smart warned: “If you don’t pull a weed out by its roots it will still come back regardless of the hot water.”
Susan Whapshott also commented, stressing the importance of total eradication: “You still have to get the whole weed out. I water my gravel so it’s all damp then just pull up by hand.”
