According to gardening experts at Compass Garden Machinery, the “simplest method for eliminating weeds in gravel driveways is to use boiling water with rock salt, which can kill them in 12 hours.” They explained that a mix of boiling water and rock salt offers a chemical-free alternative to traditional weed killers.
The boiling water can be poured directly onto the weeds, causing the plant tissues to collapse. This method is simple and doesn’t require any special equipment, making it accessible to everyone.
For those stubborn weeds, adding rock salt increases the effectiveness. The salt dries out the plant roots, ensuring they don’t make a comeback, reports the Express.
After application, it’s crucial to rinse the gravel to prevent salt build-up, which could harm surrounding plants and crops. Landscaping Cost’s gardeners also recommend the boiling water method, describing it as “simple and devastatingly effective against weeds”.
They added: “It’s a straightforward, immediate solution that shows no mercy to gravel weeds.” However, they noted that this method “works best in areas with fewer weeds”, as larger infestations might require more extensive treatment.
For those who favour a more organic approach, mulching with natural materials can be an effective way to combat weeds. Gardeners can utilise things like wood chips to stifle weed growth by obstructing sunlight and creating an inhospitable environment for the pesky plants.
