Manchester United failed to agree a deal with Bayern Munich for Mathys Tel before Tottenham were able to get a loan over the line and included an option for a permanent deal

Gary Neville is pleased Tottenham completed a deal for Mathys Tel, despite Manchester United failing in their attempt to land the young star.

Spurs secured a deadline day transfer for the 19-year-old, having been turned down earlier in the window. Tel joins Ange Postecoglou’s side on loan until the end of the season but hold an option to sign the player for £45million from Bayern Munich.

United saw their own attempts to land Tel collapse on Sunday, despite Old Trafford appearing to be the Frenchman’s preferred destination. Bayern’s demands were greater than United were willing to meet as they asked for a £5m loan fee with no option at the end of the deal.

The Lilywhites were able to navigate an agreement however. Neville believes Tottenham remain an attractive prospect however.

“I think it’s a huge draw Tottenham, not just for the stadium and the training ground, but the manager,” Neville said, appearing on Sky Sports news on deadline day.

“The style of football, a thrilling style of play they have and to play in that team, especially as a forward, they’re not getting the right results at the moment. I’m glad that Tel has gone there.

“Initially the rumour was he turned it down, then he flirted with a few other clubs, but I’m glad Tottenham have got him, and I’m glad Ange Postecoglou has got a player that will improve them.”

After not tempting Tel after their £50m bid was accepted last week, Tottenham changed their tact to make a straight loan offer, in the hope they could convince their new no.11 to join with the promise of more regular football.

Conversations with Postecoglou, and Tel’s increasing happiness saw the option placed into the deal. It allowed for a deal all parties were pleased with.

Max Eberl, Bayern Munich board member for sport paid tribute to Tel following his exit. Eberl acknowledged his lack of minutes under Vincent Kompany.

“Mathys Tel came to Bayern as a very young player and has continued to develop at the highest level here,” he said. “He hasn’t got the playing time he’d wished of late, so came to us with the desire to change something.

“In our talks together, we have now developed a set-up that offers Mathys, Bayern and Tottenham Hotspur an excellent opportunity.”
