Tommy Fury, Jake Quickenden and Sara Davies were among the celebrities to join the masses of over 60,000 participants taking part in this year’s iconic AJ Bell Great North Run
A host of celebrities joined over 60,000 runners for this weekend’s annual Great North Run. The world’s biggest half marathon once again took to the streets of Newcastle and surrounding areas as members of the public pounded the pavement for charity and accomplishment.
Runners of all ages and ability took part in the 44th edition of the iconic event, which was initially set up by former Olympian Sir Brendan Foster. And while some return each year, some were attempting their maiden run.
Among the first timers was Tommy Fury, who headed further up north with partner Molly Mae Hague’s dad for the event. And he appeared in high spirits as he posed for pictures and seemingly brushed off the fume after a recent 100km triathlete.
Many competitors were left raging as Tommy met Molly-Mae at the finish line of that event despite missing out on 30k of cycling because of problems with the road closures in France; something of which he failed to point out on his social media posts.
But there was no such shortcut in the North East on Sunday as he ran in a crowd that also included the likes of Jake Quickenden. The reality TV star later revealed he bagged himself a personal best time after his run, but was still disappointed not to record a sub one hour 30 minutes time. Instead, he finished at a very respectable 1.30 and 25 seconds.
Fellow reality TV star Ashley Cain also took part, as did local Dragons’ Den star Sara Davies. North East DJ Schak was also on hand to try out an unofficial world record attempt for the NSPCC by completing a portable DJ set while taking part.
And runners were cheered on from the off by Newcastle United stars Nick Pope and Jacob Murphy who were at the starting point to dish out high fives to the masses.
