The United Nations World Tourism Organisation has announced one of Greece’s small but pretty villages as one of the best 55 villages in the entire world for 2024
A Greek village perched on the edge of a mountain has been named as one of the best villages in the world by the United Nations (UN).
The picturesque village of Anogia, on the island of Crete, Greece, has been voted among the 55 best villages in the world by the UN World Tourism Organisation. The quaint village of Anogia was specifically recognised as an ‘Outstanding Destination’, in the ‘Rural Tourism’ category.
Anogia is perched on the slopes of Psiloritis (Mount Ida), at an altitude of 700 metres. It has a central square, which is used in the summer months for musical and theatrical performances, as well as many villas, alleys and hidden cafes. The area is also famous for its traditional Cretan music, with the pastime being a central part of local life. Many locals also pursue traditional weaving, including textiles that reflect the region’s heritage.

The village’s surrounding natural beauty offers many opportunities to explore, including hiking, caving, and enjoying panoramic views of the island. One cave, known as Ideon Cave, is where — according to Greek mythology — the god Zeus was raised by the nymphs Adrasteia and Ida.
In addition, there is the Skinakas Observatory, which offers the opportunity to stargaze and see celestial objects. The Nida Plateau is another popular tourist site, where the plateau provides breathtaking views across the region. The village is also full of cosy places to eat and drink, such as taverns.
This year marks the fourth edition of the UN World Tourism Organisation’s best villages awards, which this year recognised 55 villages from over 260 applications from more than 60 UN Tourism Member States. The villages must fulfil a criteria that includes sustainable development, the connection of local communities with mild forms of tourism and the promotion of environmental protection.
“Tourism is a vital tool for inclusion, empowering rural communities to protect and value their rich cultural heritage while driving sustainable development,” said UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.
“The Best Tourism Villages initiative not only recognizes the remarkable achievements of these villages but also highlights the transformative power of tourism. By leveraging their unique assets, these communities can foster economic growth, promote local traditions, and enhance the quality of life for their residents.
“We celebrate the villages that have embraced tourism as a pathway to empowerment and community well-being, demonstrating that sustainable practices can lead to a brighter future for all.”
The Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism initiative was launched in 2021 to advance tourism’s role in rural areas, preserving landscapes, cultural diversity, local values, and culinary traditions. The network grows every year and now has 254 villages as part of the largest community of rural destinations in the world.
