Gwyneth Paltrow has sparked speculation after posting a makeup-free breakfast video, with fans accusing her of subtly “throwing shade” at the Duchess of Sussex

Gwyneth Paltrow has sparked a flurry of speculation after posting a seemingly innocent video of herself making breakfast, leading some fans to believe the actress may have been throwing shade at Meghan Markle.

The 52-year-old Goop founder, who has sold her fans candles that smell like her vagina and whose brand has recommended drinking raw goats milk for the parasites inside their bodies, has filmed herself making scones, bacon, and eggs in her kitchen while wearing casual striped pyjamas and going make-up free, the Daily Mail reports.

Fans quickly realised the track “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” by Natalie Cole was playing in the background, a song also used in promos for Meghan’s own Netflix series, With Love, Meghan.

Some fans were quick to point out the timing of Paltrow’s video, coming closely after Meghan’s series, which launched earlier this month, received a hostile reception but has still been renewed for a second season.

The show features Meghan cooking in a luxurious kitchen. Some fans believe that Gwyneth’s down-to-earth, no-makeup, and pyjama-clad appearance in her kitchen was a subtle dig towards the Duchess.

Fans quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their thoughts, with many suggesting that Paltrow was deliberately positioning herself as more authentic and relatable. One fan tweeted: “Gwyneth Paltrow continues to throw shade & I’m here for it! No makeup in her actual kitchen!” Another fan pointed out the similarity in music choices, but the comments didn’t stop there.

The video showed Gwyneth preparing breakfast in her own kitchen, sipping coffee from a monogrammed mug, and even featuring her dog, all of which fans quickly noticed were reminiscent of elements from Meghan’s Netflix show. Noticing the similarities once again, one fan commented: “Pinstripe jammies? Check. Dog? Check. Eggs? Check. Monogrammed mug? Check. Lemons? Check? Her kitchen? Check. Jar of preserves? Check. High kick? Check.”

One of the most notable differences, however, was the contrast in the kitchen settings. Meghan filmed her series in a rented $8 million farmhouse rather than her own Montecito home, something many critics said took away from the authenticity she was attempting to create. In contrast, Gwyneth filmed in her kitchen, with a simple setup that many felt was more accessible. One social media user penned: “Go, Gwyneth. And she has a real dog in her own real kitchen on her own real property.”

Some fans suggested that Gwyneth was showing a more down-to-earth version of herself in comparison to the Duchess. One person commented: “And being as relatable as she can be, in her pj’s, hair not styled, no makeup up sipping coffee. No one praising her. Just her phone filming. Simple and easy.”

Gwyneth caused a stir when she released her ‘This Smells Like My Vagina’ candle – and again with an ‘Orgasm’ flavoured sequel

However, not everyone agreed that Paltrow’s video was intended as shade. Many fans argued that Gwyneth has been posting similar videos for years and that there was no intentional dig at Meghan. “Eh, she’s been doing these kinds of videos forever,” one fan wrote. Another person said: “I don’t think she is throwing shade.” Many refused to believe that Gwyneth was throwing shade at all.

The debate around whether Gwyneth was intentionally “throwing shade” only intensified when it was revealed that earlier this week, Gwyneth’s fitness guru friend Tracy Anderson was also accused of mocking Meghan. Anderson appeared to take a swipe at the Duchess in an Instagram video promoting a new product for Goop.

She introduced the new Tracy’s Green Goddess Crunch Salad in a video filmed in her “actual kitchen,” a phrase that many viewers found oddly specific. Fans quickly jumped to the conclusion that Anderson’s comment was a jab at Meghan’s choice of renting a kitchen.

After the video went viral, Anderson took to the comments section to clarify, saying there was “no shade intended.” She explained that she was simply highlighting that she was filming at home, as opposed to the professional Goop kitchen.

Meanwhile, Gwyneth herself addressed her relationship with Meghan in an interview with Vanity Fair. In the interview, Gwyneth admitted that while she didn’t know Meghan well, she had met her and found her “lovely.” Despite the ongoing speculation, Gwyneth made it clear that she didn’t feel any competition between herself and the Duchess. “I was raised to see other women as friends, not foes.”

Despite Gwyneth’s efforts to present herself as down-to-earth, her Goop brand has often raised eyebrows with its high-end wellness products and unconventional advice. From pricey wellness items to controversial health claims her brand has faced criticism for being out of touch with the average consumer.

Whether Gwyneth was intentional or not, fans are split and watching closely for the future.
