Broadsands Beach in North Devon has been labelled “heavon on earth” by visitors who say the stunning spot is “paradise” and boasts powder-soft sands and crystal-clear waters.
Hidden away in North Devon lies a slice of paradise that’s been dubbed “heaven on earth” and is one of the UK’s best-kept coastal secrets.
Broadsands Beach, tucked between Watermouth and Combe Martin, offers a vast expanse of golden sands ideal for basking in the sunshine, playing beach games, or enjoying a family picnic.
The waters at this idyllic spot are calm and inviting for swimmers, though it’s important to note the absence of lifeguards. The beach prides itself on its unspoiled charm, free from the trappings of modern facilities, instead drawing visitors with its sheer natural allure.
For those looking to do more than sunbathe, the surrounding coastal paths and walking trails provide ample opportunity to take in the stunning views along the coastline. The area is also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, with an array of seabirds, marine creatures, and even the chance to spot dolphins or seals.
Broadsands Beach has been recognised as one of the UK’s hidden gems, with a previous feature in The Times highlighting its appeal.
The paper captured its essence for those seeking adventure, stating: “This is a beach for the brave-hearted: it involves a dramatic descent via steps through heavily wooded cliffs, with occasional railings to cling on to, but the reward is worth it.
“The sheltered cove of coarse, gunmetal grey sand is best at low tide, with views north across Combe Martin Bay to where Little Hangman rears up, further along the rollercoaster ride that is the South West Coast Path.”
The Times heaped further praise on the area, continuing: “Beyond Hangman the cliffs are fierce, broken only at Heddon’s Mouth, where a bucolic stream runs through the landscaped gardens of the National Trust-owned Hunter’s Inn hotel, the perfect place for hearty pub meals after a day on the beach.”
And it seems that guests concur, with the spot boasting an impressive 4.5 rating on Tripadvisor, with heaps of visitors smitten with this little slice of paradise.
One beachgoer shared their experience: “Beautiful natural beach carved out of the tree lined cliff, accessible by cleverly crafted steps not for wimps or disabled. The effort is rewarded when you witness the pure nature beauty and the clear clean sea lapping on the shore of a quiet beach blessed with areas of natural shade. It’s a paradise on earth, don’t tell anyone.”
Meanwhile, another happy visitor detailed their time spent nearby: “We recently stayed at the Watermouth Valley campsite and visited Broadsands Beach. Yes the steps are steep and it’s a long way down, but we are so glad we did it. Gorgeous little enclosed beach, fantastic for a little swim, sea glass hunting and taking in the beautiful sounds of the sea.”
One enthusiast said: “It’s a little piece of heaven and we even forgave the 250 steps to get down to the beach. Of course we had to come back up too.”
