I tried out some of Virgin Experience Days’ best activities to plan an early Mother’s Day present – it was booked in minutes and she said it was one of the best days she’d ever had
With Mother’s Day approaching on March 30, now is the perfect time to start planning how you’re going to spend the day with the special women in your life. Although gifts of jewellery and flowers are always nice, there’s nothing better than spending quality time together, which is why this year I decided to plan a whole day of activities with my mum using Virgin Experience Days .
I combined two different activities ; one that was more high adrenaline and lively, followed by something more relaxed and luxurious to make sure we had the best of both worlds, and it turned out to be so easy that it was booked in minutes. I had my pick of activities from crafts and race car driving to pampering spa days and afternoon teas, but I ended up choosing an afternoon of axe throwing followed by a luxury tasting menu at a local restaurant, and my mum said it was one of the best days she’d ever had.

Usually trying to book and plan activities involves lots of planning and time, and more often than not you find something that sounds perfect only to discover it’s either unavailable on the day you want, or it’s actually miles away from where you live. Although it was a little overwhelming trying to decide what to choose for the day’s activities, one of the best things about using Virgin Experience Days to book was that everything was in one place.
You can narrow it down based on your location, and also refine it by things like what your budget is or what occasion you’re celebrating. That made it instantly easier to see which things I wanted to choose from, and what I thought my mum would enjoy.
Our activities
There’s nothing better than trying something new together, so we opted for axe throwing at our local Go Ape location for our afternoon activity. We were lucky enough to have good weather, and whilst our aim might leave something to be desired, it was a great idea starting the day with some fresh air, doing something physical and trying a new skill that neither of us had even remotely done before.
After getting a little muddy I wanted a totally different experience for the evening, and wanted to treat my mum to something really luxurious and relaxing. Rather than your usual afternoon tea or dinner out, I chose a nine course tasting menu at Six Rooftop Restaurant at the Baltic Art Gallery in Newcastle (where we live), which is somewhere we’ve both wanted to try for ages but never managed to get around to.
It was so nice having everything pre-paid so we just needed to worry about paying for our drinks at the end, and the whole experience was around three hours with some of the best food we’d both ever eaten. It really felt like a luxurious treat, and it was so nice to spend some real quality time together.
How to book
One of the best parts about this was that everything was sorted ahead of time; it was planned, booked and paid for in minutes, so all we had to do on the day was turn up. You can visit Virgin Experience Days website for all the activities in your area (or further afield if you want to travel and plan a weekend away!).
The price ranges span from under £50 to £500+ so you can find something that suits your budget, and you can organise your day exactly how you want without jumping between different websites and booking forms. Once you’ve picked your activities, you literally just add them to your basket, pick your dates and times, and pay – job done.
Of course Virgin Experience Days aren’t the only place you can book the perfect Mother’s Day outing. Red Letter Days also offers a whole host of different activities and events you can do across the country, whilst Buyagift also offers plenty of choice on ways to spend your Mother’s Day together.
