A home expert has shared his top tips when it comes to revamping your bathroom and has urged people to remove certain items in order to keep bathrooms hygienic and practical
As many people will start to spring clean their homes ahead of summer, an interiors expert has urged all homeowners to clear their bathrooms of a few items.
It’s always nice to give your bathroom a little spruce up, and decorating it can completely transform the space into a little haven, but according to home expert Sam Tamlyn from Shutterly Fabulous there are some things you should avoid.
From carpets being a big no no, to maximising the space, Sam shares his top tips when it comes to bathroom decorating and how to keep it as hygienic as possible while looking stylish.

Firstly, the pro said you should always avoid carpets in the toilet, and always opt for tiles or waterproof flooring instead. He said: “Carpeting in the bathroom is an absolute no-no, yet shockingly, 1 in 8 Britons say it is okay to carpet a bathroom. Not only do carpets retain moisture, leading to mould and mildew, but they also make the space look significantly dated and less hygienic. Therefore, you should choose tiles or waterproof flooring that is incredibly easy to clean and maintain,” as reported by The Sun.
Next up, Sam suggested for those looking to redecorate, to choose closed storage units instead of having products sitting out in view. Although having open storage solutions may be good for easy access, the expert said it often leads to “clutter and a disorganised look”. He said closed cabinets and drawers help keep bathrooms tidy with a “sleek, streamlined appearance”.
For windows, Sam said it’s important to achieve a “light and airy” space and advised not to hang heavy curtains or drapes. This could make the bathroom feel dark and cramped, as well as absorb moisture which could lead on to mould growth. Instead, the expert suggested opting for blinds or shutters to “allow natural light”.
One trend Sam urges people to not follow is having all black fixtures. He said the all-black matte décor is “on the way out” and instead is being replaced by brighter and more ‘timeless’ pieces.

“A few years ago, all-black matte fixtures were considered a bold statement, but they are now less popular. Current trends are leaning towards brighter finishes, such as nickel, chrome, and gold that offer more versatility and timelessness. All-black fixtures require more maintenance and can be challenging to coordinate with the rest of the bathroom décor,” he explained.
Finally, when it comes to decorations, if you want to have plants to help spruce up the area, he insisted that you simply can’t fake it.
“Fake plants might seem like a low-maintenance option, but they can collect dust and look tacky over time. Instead, opt for real plants that thrive in humid environments, such as peace lilies and snake plants, to add a touch of nature and freshness to your bathroom.”
The expert said these simple tweaks can help instantly modernise your space to look elegant, while also being practical and hygienic too.
