Dramatic footage captures the moment officers chase the man in their car before catching up to him and firing a fifteen fatal shots – as he is filmed falling to the ground

Illinois: Police shoot gunman after he takes aim at officers

This is the horrifying moment a gunman is shot and killed by police as he raises a shotgun towards them that he earlier used to kill a man.

The dramatic footage, which captures cops repeatedly shooting at the man, came after the suspect broke into a home in Kendall County, near Chicago, Illinois, and killed the owner with his own weapon. Bodycam footage taken from October 4 and later released by police shows the gunman fleeing in a stolen Ford Bronco SUV before he is forced to stop and get out of his car in heavy traffic.

In the video, he is seen climbing out of the 4WD and aiming the pump-action shotgun at the two officers chasing him. Moments later, he falls to the ground and clutches his stomach in pain as he is shot by the officers fifteen times at close range.

Officers from Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and Plano Police Department are then captured attempting to administer emergency first aid, but the man was later pronounced dead in hospital, local media reports.

Emergency services had earlier recieved a haunting phone call from a nearby address in which the exact moment of the death of Russell Novak, the gunman’s victim, is heard. Novak had called 911 at 6.39 pm to report a break in at him home, which saw the robber take his shotgun.

As Novak details what is happening, he is suddenly heard shouting: “Hey! Hey!” before gasping, by which point the loud blast of a shotgun is heard, and the despatcher asks: “Hello Hello?” Seconds later a neighbour calls the police and tells them: “Somebody next door to me, sounded like a shotgun. Please come.”

She adds: “Yeah that’s what it sounds like, like somebody just shot through his window and I just heard it. If you could please hurry.” Police, who have not yet named the suspect, later said the two men were known to each other. In a joint statement, the two forces said: “The individuals involved in this incident were known to each other and this was not a random act.”
