WARNING: DISTRESSING DETAILS. The 41-year-old woman admitted to throwing her premature newborn into a bin at home – sparking a major search at a nearby landfill

Police in Germany have been forced to scour through tonnes of rubbish at a landfill after a mum admitted to throwing her newborn baby in the bin at home – just hours after she had given birth.

The 41-year-old unnamed woman from Marienheide, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, is believed to have given birth to a premature baby on September 26. Four days later, she was admitted to a nearby clinic in Gummersbach, where doctors suspected the early birth.

Cologne Criminal Police said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “The doctors had diagnosed a suspected premature birth in the woman who was admitted to a clinic in Gummersbach on Monday, 30th September.” After being probed by medics who questioned why the birth was not recorded in her records, the mum came clean – and admitted to disposing of the infant in a household waste bin for reasons undisclosed.

Once the case came to the attention of the police, officers placed her under arrest before a group of detectives assembled to search a waste disposal site in Lindlar to find the baby’s body. They are now appealing to witnesses for any information on the whereabouts of the baby’s body, which, until located, may have been disposed of elsewhere.

Cologne Criminal Police said: “The Criminal Investigation Department 11 of the Cologne Police, under the direction of the Cologne Public Prosecutor’s Office, is investigating a deceased fetus that its 41-year-old mother, residing in Marienheide (Oberbergischer Kreis), allegedly disposed of in household waste on Thursday, 26th September. The search for the baby’s body by a specially set up homicide squad is ongoing on suspicion of homicide. The 41-year-old woman has been arrested.”

In a separate incident in July, a lawyer for a luxury carmaker was jailed after throwing her newborn baby from the upstairs window of her German home in Neckar as she worried becoming a mum would ruin her career, a court heard.

A court in Germany heard how Katarina Jovanovic, 28, gave birth in secret after not telling anyone she was pregnant. Minutes after the tiny child was born, the 28-year-old is said to have thrown her minutes’ old daughter from her apartment window – a fall of around 12 feet.

Horrified passersby later found the infant’s body underneath Jovanovic’s balcony and called the police, who arrested her. Jovanovic was found guilty of manslaughter at the Heilbronn District Court in early July.
