Ten people have tragically died after four gunmen entered a bar in Mexico and opened fire. Police are hunting for the attackers as local authorities addressed the unprecedented event

Mexico: Four gunmen kill 10 people at a bar in unprovoked attack

A video has captured the moment a group of gunmen arrived at a bar before they killed ten people at a tourist hotspot in Mexico.

Shocking footage recorded the four attackers as they pulled up in a pickup truck at Los Cantaritos bar in the district of Santiago de Querétaro, which is around 120 miles northwest of Mexico City. The suspects hopped out of the vehicle at around 9.30pm and appeared to be carrying massive, long-range guns. Harrowing footage from inside the venue showed the gunmen open fire at people who were eating.

Frightened diners could be seen screaming and dropping to the floor as they attempted to find cover under tables. The gang were there for a few minutes before they left the bloodied bar. Emergency services pronounced ten people dead at the scene and reported at least seven injured, said the city’s public security department chief Juan Luis Ferrusca.

He told local media: “Through a call to 911 where they reported detonations on Circunvalación Street, specifically at the Los Cantaritos bar, the emergency services arrived at the scene, where they confirmed that four people with long weapons arrived on board a van that was identified.”

Police managed to trace the license plate of the getaway truck and followed it to a nearby city. By the time they arrived, the vehicle had been set on fire. Cops detained one suspect, reports The Sun. Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri addressed the “unprecedented event” and said, “We cannot ever stand for this.” In a statement on Twitter, he wrote: “I reiterate to our community that there will be punishment for those responsible for this brutal act.

“We will continue to close our borders and maintain security in our state. The entire security system of Querétaro is mobilized to find these criminals.” In an updated post, he added: “Today I contacted the relatives of the good people who died last Saturday, to reiterate my support and consolation in these difficult times. They were young people who were having fun and whose death is unjust and unacceptable. I have personally expressed my condolences, solidarity and support. The law will be applied and there will be justice.”

Investigators are still looking for the other suspects. Querétaro Mayor Felifer Macías vowed to find the attackers and tweeted: “We are in permanent coordination with the State Government Security System, corporations of the metropolitan area and the State Attorney General’s Office, to find those responsible for the events that occurred tonight in the city. We are assisting the victims and collaborating in the investigations. The municipal government is using all its strength to protect Querétaro.”
