Manchester City face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in their Champions League play-off second leg following their 3-2 defeat at the Etihad to the Spanish giants last week
Manchester City face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu with their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread.
The Citizens come into the second leg of the knockout phase play-off on Wednesday night having lost the reverse fixture 3-2 at the Etihad last Tuesday in dramatic fashion. Despite leading with just five minutes to go, goals from former Sky Blue Brahim Diaz and England star Jude Bellingham saw Carlo Ancelotti’s side take the initiative in the tie.
A brace from Erling Haaland had left City on the verge of victory on the night. The Norwegian international’s second looked to have cancelled out Kylian Mbappe’s fortunate equaliser, but Madrid rallied to stun Pep Guardiola’s side in the closing stages.
City must now stage a dramatic comeback of their own and will be sweating on the fitness of Haaland after he limped off with a knee issue in their 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday. Bellingham was sent off for Los Blancos in La Liga the same day, but that suspension does not apply in Europe and he is available to feature.
Madrid and City are responsible for the tournament’s last three winners with Guardiola’s team claiming the trophy in 2023, sandwiched between the Spanish club’s two triumphs in 2022 and 2024. Yet one of the European heavyweights will not be heading into Friday’s draw for the remaining stages.
It also means City will have to win at the Bernabeu, a ground where they have won once in six attempts. And here’s how you can follow the action.
