Marks and Spencer allows customers to pick up a To Good to Go bag of food that would otherwise be thrown away – and it costs just £5 to buy

A bargain hunting influencer known for her thrifty buys unloaded the contents of an M&S surprise food bag and was shocked at what was inside.

Becky’s Bazaar, a TikTok user, has amassed 392,000 followers on the social media app, and is known for scouting bootfairs, unboxing returned parcels, and picking up amazing finds in charity shops. In one of her most recent videos, she is filmed walking into a Marks & Spencer’s store and asking for one of the bags at the till.

For a mere £5, the paper bag is handed over by staff, and it’s absolutely filled to the brim with quality food items from the supermarket. The initiative has been launched to try and reduce food waste, making use of perishable food that would have otherwise been chucked in the bin. Entering the store, Becky presents her phone – as this is the only way to obtain the knock-off produce.

Shoppers need to download the Too Good to Go app, and present it at check-out, as it appears the bags are not on the shop floor to be picked up independently. “Okay mum, shall we have a look at what’s inside this Too Good to Go bag?” she said. Her mum pulled out a pack of four plain scones, a bottle of carrot juice, two boxes of lemon tarts, a mango and berry medley box, a carrot and hummus pot, spicy tuna dragon roll sushi, a tomato and basil spaghetti ready meal, a roast chicken and avocado sandwich, roasted beef slices and a portion of sticky noodles.

The bag’s contents would have easily amounted to six times the £5 price-tag, and Becky asked her mum if she thought it was worth it. “Definitely,” she added. Every food bag is different depending on what food is currently available to be discounted.

‘My bags have been complete rubbish’

An array of commenters also chimed in, with some sharing different experiences. One TikToker added: “That was a good bag. I’ve had a few M&S bags now, x3 hummus, bag of spinach, falafel wraps and a few other bits. Nothing like these bag. M&S were smart here with this TikTok by filling it so well.”

Another added: “That’s a good bag, I’m getting fed up with them, my bags have all been complete rubbish.” A statement on the M&S website reads: “Food waste has a huge impact on the planet and at M&S, we’ve taken some huge steps so far. But we know there is more work to be done. We pride ourselves on the quality and freshness of our food and believe it’s just too good to be wasted. That’s why, we’re finding new ways to cut our waste and make sure all our surplus food ends up on a plate.”
