A mum has chosen a name for her son that is so unique that she isn’t quite sure how to spell it – as employees at her child’s nursery have seen her use two different spellings

Careful consideration needs to go into choosing a baby name.

One of the first decisions many parents make when they choose a baby name is whether they want to go for a classic and popular name or if they want to push the boat out with something unique. Once you’ve chosen your desired name, you have to think about how to spell it – as sometimes even the most common names come with spelling variations, such as picking between Alan and Allen or Jane and Jayne.

But one mum has seemingly picked a name so unique for her child that even she struggles to remember how it should be spelt. The name was shared on Reddit by a woman who works in a nursery in Germany where the little boy is enrolled. She claimed she’s seen the mum use two different spellings for her son’s name.

In her post, the woman explained that Kilian has become “fairly popular” among new parents recently, and her nursery already has two Kilians among 70 students. So when another student enrolled with the same name, the woman thought nothing of it – until she saw it was spelt Keylan.

She wrote: “When they filled out our documents, I saw that they spelt it Keylan. They seemed to notice me being confused as the father quickly claimed it was ‘the French way to spell it’. (I Googled it later – it’s not.) As time went on, we got used to the spelling and just pronounced it the same way the parents do.”

However, when the nursery ran an event for the children in which they needed to bring family photographs into school, the woman noticed one big problem – some of the child’s photos had “Keylan” written on the back, while others had a different spelling, “Kelyan”.

She added: “Then came a day when the parents should bring family pics, and I was completely shocked when I turned one of them over and saw that his mom wrote ‘Kelyan’ on the back, thinking we had spelt the name wrong the whole time. Turned another one over, ‘Keylan’. It turns out that half the time, she uses Keylan; the other half, Kelyan. His official name is Keylan.

“Part of me feels sorry for the parents cause I’m not sure if they knew the correct spelling, but I’m mostly annoyed at them because they are in their late 20s, and I’m sure as hell they know how to use Google.”

The woman said she isn’t sure if the mum is dyslexic and has difficulty with spelling, but said she still believes the mum should have gone with the standard spelling of her son’s name if that was the case, as it would avoid confusion for other people who would be able to consistently spell it correctly.

Commenters were quick to share their own similar stories, with one person saying their mum still spells her name wrong – and she’s 52. One person said: “I knew a Shania (Sh-Nye-uh) spelt Shaina (Shay-na). Drives me crazy.”
