Opinions are often divided when it comes to age gap relationships, but one woman insists she would never date a man older than her again after an awkward family introduction

A woman was left mortified after her brothers gave her ex-boyfriend a brutal and disapproving nickname.

When it comes to dating, we all have different wants and needs. Some people focus heavily on looks while others want someone who is funny or has a good heart. Marriage, children and age are also often big factors when considering if an individual is the right fit to be a partner. Some people opt for folk their own age while others don’t care if there is a big age gap.

One woman thought age never bothered her – but she later regretted her decision. Rue raked in 18million views and more than 174,000 likes on X (formerly Twitter) after sharing what it was like dating a 40-year-old man when she was just 20.

She said that at the time it was “thrilling”, but she now believes “age gap men are delusional”. It was awkward when she introduced her older partner to her family.

She said: “He met my parents and I got the ick looking at him standing beside my dad. My brothers exclusively referred to him as ‘old man river’.”

She added that her former partner “cringed deeply” at the nickname he was given but “did his best to be polite”. Her parents sat her down for a talk after being bewildered by the relationship.

“I broke up with him and only dated men my own age after,” she concluded. She also noted that the 40-year-old was trying to make it as a writer while living off her parent’s money – which upon reflection also gives her the ‘ick’.

People rushed to the comments, with many agreeing that age gap relationships often do not work. One individual shared her experience and said: “I married a man 9 years older than me when I was 20. It didn’t end well, and I couldn’t see how he was manipulating me back then.”

Another commented: “Sometimes we got to learn the hard way. But yeah a 20-year age gap is kind of a stretch.” “I would never bring some age gap old man home to my dad,” a third said.
