A woman has been left baffled after she got a new tattoo and was slammed by her husband for ‘changing herself drastically’ – and people online are split over who was right
Tattoos are a great form of self-expression.
Not everyone is a fan of tattoos, but for those who do want to add some artwork to their skin, they can be a fantastic way to show off your personality and express yourself. Just like dressing a certain way or dyeing your hair a certain colour, tattoos can help you feel more comfortable in your own skin.
But one woman who currently has seven tattoos has been left gobsmacked after her husband blew up at her for not asking for his permission before she booked an appointment for her eighth inking. She is currently 53 and has been married to her husband for over 25 years. When they first tied the knot she didn’t have any tattoos, but started getting them done three years ago and loves how they make her feel.
Her husband, however, is less than impressed with her new form of self-expression. In fact, he was so livid when he found out she was getting an eighth tattoo that he accused her of “changing herself drastically” and claimed she was “quickly reaching the limit” beyond which he would no longer find her attractive.
In a post on Reddit, the woman explained: “Yesterday, I told him I made an appointment for another tattoo. He told me I needed to consider that he married me when I had zero tattoos, and I am changing myself drastically. He also said I am quickly reaching the limit where he will no longer find me attractive.
“To be clear, I work and the money I spend for tattoos isn’t coming from joint funds or money needed to pay bills. His argument is strictly about how he feels about my body and how I am choosing to decorate it.”
The woman noted that her husband also doesn’t like it when she cuts her hair short, and these issues together have made her see him as “controlling.” But he believes he is justified in being upset because she’s making “drastic permanent changes” to her body without taking his feelings into consideration.
The mum-of-two also said that some of her tattoos have been done to cover up scars that she was self-conscious about so they have genuinely helped her feel more comfortable with her own body, and she doesn’t believe her husband should get to dictate what she does with her own skin.
Commenters on the post were split, however. They all agreed that the woman could do whatever she wanted with her body, but many also said that her husband “doesn’t have to like it”. Several even said that if he ended their marriage over her appearance changes, he would be right to do so.
One person said: “You’re free to get tattoos and he’s free to dislike it/leave. It’s not that deep.” Another added: “You don’t have to consult him to do something to your body. He doesn’t have to find you attractive if you make changes to your body.”
