A mum-of-two has been left floored after looking at the bill from the birth of her second son in the US – despite her being in hospital for less than 48 hour with no complications, the cost is shockingly high

A woman who gave birth in America has been left gobsmacked after working out how much it would have cost if she did not have health insurance.

While the NHS is not without its issues, us Brits are fortunate enough to get free healthcare. Pregnant mothers can be sure that their check ups and birth – whether it be the traditional route or via surgery – are covered by being a British citizen. In the US things are quite different – the system is dependent on private insurance and government programs.

Quin, who is a lifestyle and motherhood content creator, gave birth to her second child around 10 weeks ago. The US mum recently got her hospital bill and said: “My mind is blown.”

Quin said her birth experience was straightforward – she was in hospital for less than 48 hours and did not require any surgery. “I was healthy, my baby was healthy, but my bill was still so high,” she said in shock. People have been left horrified by the whopping amount of money it requires to bring a child into the world in the US.

Quin broke down her bill on her page @quinmhamilton, and said her charge for room and board was $25,489 [19,726], the recovery room was priced at $12,322 [£9,536] and her labour and delivery room cost $5,776 [£4,470]. Her lab charges were $1,885 [£1,458] and the medical and surgical supplies and devices were $2,088 [£1,615] – plus she had a pharmacy charge of $1,933 [£1,495]. Her grand total would have been $49,494.08 [£38,303].

Quin said: “My mind is just blown right now. I didn’t pay the bill when we had our first son – I don’t think I even saw it – but now I’m seeing this I’m just so shocked that this is how much it costs to have a baby in the United States.”

Quin added: “Thank goodness for insurance taking care of almost the full bill but still that is wild.” One parent commented on the video clip and said: “I had a charge for skin to skin right after, like what?”

“That is mind blowing, truly shocking,” another quipped. “It’s all free in Ireland,” commented one. “Free in Sweden,” said another. One other commented: “All free in Norway.”
