A woman was left a with miserable start to her Canary Islands trip after failing to realise there are two airports in Tenerife – and her hotel was miles from where she landed

If you’re heading to Tenerife for some winter sun, you may want to take heed of a tip from a travel guru on who learned a costly lesson recently.

Summer, who visited the Canary Islands, warned in a TikTok video: “If you’re ever travelling to the Canary Islands you need to be aware there are two airports – one in the north and another in the south. The mistake I made – even though I knew there were two – is that I didn’t check which airport was closest to where I was staying.”

She emphasised checking your hotel’s proximity to the right Tenerife airport to avoid unnecessary expenses. Lamenting her own blunder, she shared: “I was unfortunately going to the south, but landed in the north. A taxi all the way ended up costing me around €150 (£125 approx.) There’s no Ubers, by the way – so don’t make the same mistake I did. You don’t want to spend €150 on a taxi.”

Among her followers, one chimed in with a similar tale of woe: “I just made this and had to pay €100 for a taxi.” A second pitched in with a savvy suggestion, meanwhile: “What we did, since our hotel was in south as well, we took the bus as closer we could and then the taxi, an overall it was very cheap.”

Whilst a third added they would take Summer’s advice seriously: “I’m going next week and it looks like I’m going to have to do this. The bus looks like it takes too long.”

Despite some of Summer’s followers believing that only one airport in Tenerife is open for passenger flights, the island’s tourism website clarifies: “The international airport of Los Rodeos-Tenerife Norte is located in the north of the island, in the district of La Laguna which is about 10 kilometres from the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife.”

It adds: “One of the two airports on Tenerife, it mainly operates flights between islands and to mainland Spain, although there are some international flights. Every year almost four million passengers use this airport, which can be reached via the TF-5 motorway.”

And regarding the south of the island, it states: “The Aeropuerto Tenerife Sur – Reina Sofía is located in the district of Granadilla de Abona. From this airport over 150 airlines operate international, national and inter-island flights and almost nine million passengers use it every year making it one of the busiest airports in Spain. It is located very close to the tourist resorts in the south of the island and can be reached via the TF-1 motorway.”
