A man from Northern Ireland was left baffled after his chippy order didn’t turn out the way he had planned, and it’s left people divided over who was in the wrong

Most Brits love a Friday night treat from the local chippy – keeping the tradition of our “national dish”, fish and chips, alive. Whether you’re craving scampi or a classic battered fish, there’s no shortage of choice, with over 10,000 specialist shops across the UK.

But, of course, most chippies don’t just offer seafood, as you’ll often find burgers, battered sausages and sometimes even kebabs on the menu. Despite this, most people will have a set chippy order they always go for when treating themselves to a takeaway. However, one man decided to order something new during his last visit to his local chippy, but things didn’t really go as planned.

“If you ordered an egg burger from a chip shop, what would you expect to get?” he asked other users in his post before explaining what had happened, saying it wasn’t a complaint, but that they laughed when they realised what they’d ordered.

He went on to explain that he and his partner had ordered food from a chippy. He himself had gone for an 8oz burger with onions, mayonnaise and thousand island sauce, whereas his partner had ordered an egg burger.

While it might sound odd, the Redditor explained that they’d expected to receive a beef patty with an egg on top. Instead, they received a big surprise when they unwrapped their order at home.

“When I collected the order and returned home we discovered they just put an egg in a burger bun,” he revealed.

“Like I said, we didn’t complain, because we thought it was funny. But should I have been more specific when ordering or should the chip shop ask a follow up question to make sure they got it right?”

People quickly took to the comment section to discuss their thoughts, with many being unable to agree as to what an “egg burger” actually referred to.

“It’s a chippy, I’d expect anything from a plain burger with a fried egg to a deep friend burger with an omelette,” one person said.

Another person went on to reveal what they’d expect: “Fried egg in a bun. But looks like I’m the only one who would expect that!” However, another person went on to argue: “That’s an egg butty to me. Sounds dumb but it needs a burger to be an egg burger!”

However, someone else went on to say they’d expect it to be “a burger with an egg on”. Several others seemed to agree to this, as another user went on to point out: “This is the answer! If it was just an egg in a roll I’d expect it to say ‘egg bap’ or ‘egg roll’. The word burger implies that it includes a patty, likely beef.”

“I’ve never heard the term egg burger! So a blank look is what I’d expect,” someone else said.

Another user said: “I wouldn’t order such a thing, but for the sake of the question – I would ask what it actually is before ordering, as I have never in my life heard of an egg burger.”
