I purchased the Amazon Fire TV 50-inch 4-Series for £299.99, down from £499.99, and now it’s been reduced again for a limited time as part of Amazon Big Deal Days sale

Our old TV had been giving up for quite some time. The screen had gone dull with a slight blue tint to everything, and the quality had diminished over time. As a result, we’d been planning to get a new TV in the Black Friday sales, until I spotted an unmissable deal on an Amazon Fire TV as part of the retailer’s Prime Day sale.

Back in July, I purchased the Amazon Fire TV 50-inch 4-Series for £299.99, down from £499.99, with even our Tech Commerce Content Editor, Harriet exclaiming how good the deal was. And now, it’s been reduced again for a limited time as part of the retailer’s Big Deal Days, which run until 11.59pm on Wednesday, October 9.

When it comes to major shopping events like Amazon Prime Big Deal Days, it can be easy to be seduced by limited-time offers and deep discounts that aren’t necessarily worth the money. When it comes to larger, considered purchases, many customers may prefer to wait for the likes of Black Friday and January sales, which now run much longer, to give more time to make an informed purchase. However, if you sleep on this Amazon Fire TV deal this week – you might come to regret it, and let me tell you why.

The Amazon Fire TV 50-inch 4-Series is a step up from the 2-Series device, but not quite as high-tech as the Omni series, striking a happy medium between the two, while being a major upgrade on our former device. We had a budget of around £300 to spend on a new TV and wanted to get the most for our money, and with the Amazon device having 40% off the RRP it felt like a really good value deal. We could have opted for the top-spec Omni in the smaller 43-inch for the same price, however, decided to forego some features in favour of the larger screen.

The first immediately noticeable change was the 4K Ultra HD resolution with HDR 10 and HLG support, which instantly levelled up our viewing experience. The colours are vibrant and the picture is really crisp, making movies and series really pop on the screen. At times, it really felt as though you were in the film, bringing a really immersive, cinematic experience into our home. To really enhance this, we also mounted the TV to the wall and added backlighting to create more ambience.

The Fire TV interface, which gives you access to an enormous library of content and apps, is incredibly slick. It makes it really easy to switch between your regular programmes and streaming services, with apps like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ all in one place. And if you can’t remember which service you were watching your latest series on, you can use the Alexa Voice Remote to find shows. While this version doesn’t have hands-free voice control, pressing a button works just fine for us, which is why we opted for the 4-Series over the Omni.

The TV has three HDMI ports, which means my dad can have his Xbox plugged straight in, too. Dolby Digital Plus provides good sound quality on its own, but the TV also supports HDMI eARC, so adding a soundbar for better audio is straightforward.

While the 4-Series doesn’t support hands-free Alexa voice control or two-way video calling, for the price and what we use it for, these aren’t dealbreakers. And while we’re impressed and more than happy with the picture quality, it’s not quite on par with high-end models like OLED TVs, but for this price range, it’s more than enough.

Overall If you’re looking for a well-rounded, budget-friendly 4K TV, the Amazon Fire TV 50-inch 4-Series is a solid choice. It’s currently down to £299.99, saving £200 for Big Deal Days, and will most likely return to full price by Thursday. It’s also reduced at Currys, and according to price history checker CamelCamelCamel, it’s the lowest price we’ve ever seen it, so it’s worth snapping up now to avoid disappointment when it goes back up to full price. Alternatively, Sky Glass also offers a 4K smart TV, complete with immersive 360 Dolby Atmos sound from £699.
