Meta-owned messaging giant WhatsApp has divided opinions online after it was revealed that all 2.7 billion users can now speak directly to OpenAI’s ChatGPT using the app

WhatsApp has sparked debate once again after unveiling a brand new feature. The messaging giant recently ruffled feathers after replacing the ‘Typing’ function with three bouncing dots – a move some users branded ‘annoying’. Then, it was reported WhatsApp is slated to release a reminder notification for chats you haven’t responded to. A spokesperson for Meta told the Mirror it had nothing to share on the rumoured feature, which would send you a ping whenever you’ve left your friends on read for too long.

Now, WhatsApp has joined forces with artificial intelligence brand OpenAI so that all 2.7 billion users can communicate with its ChatGPT assistant. “We care a lot about continuing to reduce barriers for more people to try out AI and see what it can do for them,” said Antonia Woodford of OpenAI. “We’re really excited that we’re bringing ChatGPT to you through two familiar channels: calling and WhatsApp.”

Taking to X (former Twitter), OpenAI explained that users in the US will get 15 minutes of voice-calling ChatGPT per month, but that ‘availability and limits may change’. You can also talk to the AI model by texting the same number: 1-800-242-8478). “For a fuller experience with access to more features like search, higher limits, and greater personalisation, existing users should continue using ChatGPT directly through their accounts,” OpenAI added.

Swathes of social media users flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts, with many hailing WhatsApp for making AI more accessible – especially for the elderly. “Every grandmother in the world never has to be lonely again!” one person raved. Another commented: “I put this in the contact book, not sure for what but I sense it could come in handy.” A third joked: “Give the ChatGPT phone number to your parents immediately. Tell them it’s the number to call for ‘tech support’,” while a fourth branded the feature ‘incredibly cool’.

However, with concern growing around AI and its potential to ‘take’ people’s jobs, the collaboration inevitably drew in criticism. “This has to be the most absurd thing ever,” one person fumed. “Oh my god, imagine being so pathetic that you spend your time texting nobody.” Another user scathed: “What’s the point of this?” while a third branded the feature a ‘joke’. Others were ‘disappointed’ that the AI contact doesn’t yet respond to voice notes.

Earlier this month, WhatsApp revealed four new updates to improve users’ calling experience. These included the ability to select specific participants from a group chat, new effects on video calls (like adding puppy ears), improved calling on desktop, and ‘better quality video calls’.
