Dua Lipa has gone viral for her bizarre food addition she adds to a glass of Diet Coke. Mirror writer Niamh decided to give it a go to see why the pop star loved the strange pairing so much

There are some bizarre food concoctions out there, from McDonald’s chips dipped in a milkshake to balsamic vinegar and ice cream, but pop star Dua Lipa has raised some eyebrows over her Diet Coke pairing.

The pop star has shared her unusual Diet Coke concoction with the world as she revealed she adds a few extra ingredients of her own to give it a ‘kick’, but many people aren’t convinced. As she proudly poured pickle juice, followed by jalapeno juice, into an icy cup of Diet Coke, many people were left baffled over the bizarre recipe, so I just simply had to try it out.

Now, I do love a spicy margarita and I do love pickles, as well as jalapenos, so this didn’t sound too outlandish for me to want to try. However I can’t say I’ve ever had the urge to combine the two with a can of Coke, but if it’s good enough for Dua, it’s good enough for me.

Armed with a glass full of ice, a can of Diet Coke, a jar of sliced gherkins and a jar of sliced jalapenos I was ready to go, and seriously intrigued. I wondered if it would in a way resemble a spicy marg? Would the bitterness of the gherkins take over? Or would it be a real delight? Let’s find out…

Granted, I don’t think this is a drink you could drink in the office or in a restaurant, and it’s best kept as a secret indulgence. It’s not really a drink I think you could drink anywhere in public without getting a few looks, so in the safety of my own home, without the worry of being judged (except for my mum), I was ready to give it a go.

I poured the Diet Coke into a glass of ice just like Dua Lipa did and then poured in some of the pickle water, followed by some of the jalapeno water. I then garnished it with a few sliced gherkins and a few jalapenos, but I was not expecting the result.

I can’t really say what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t a tangy, flat Diet Coke. The pickle and jalapeno juice certainly killed any of the fizz from the Coke, so it was extremely flat. It was also extremely bitter. Perhaps I added a little too much pickle juice but it was very overpowering.

Weirdly, it also really made me crave a McDonald’s. It actually tasted a bit like a Big Mac and I can’t put my finger on why – perhaps it’s reminiscent of the pungent gherkins that complement the signature sauce. I can’t say it’s the worst thing I’ve ever tried, but I can’t say it tastes better than a regular, usually refreshing, glass of Diet Coke.

Sometimes things are often best left as they are, and I think Diet Coke is one of them. Sorry Dua Lipa, but even as a pickle fan, this one really doesn’t work.
