A fish and chip shop in North Wales has plenty of strong reviews for the quality of its food but it stands out for one particular reason as well being very reasonably priced

Brits looking for tasty fish and chips are spoilt for choice along the North Wales coast but there is a shop that stands out from the rest for one reason.

If you take a look at online restaurant reviews, it backs up the locals claim about the quality of the traditional fast food takeaways in the region. From Connah’s Quay to Caergybi there is an abundance of fish and chip shops offering meals at a reasonable price. No longer is a cod and a portion of chips a cheap meal in many parts of the UK especially during the cost of living crisis but in North Wales you can still expect change from a £10 note.

And one fish and chip shop that stands out is Alex’s Fish Bar for the overall quality of the food and in particular its curry sauce. Located just off the A55, Old Colwyn is classed as a large village, and is separate to nearby Colwyn Bay – as any local will tell you. On the High Street is Alex’s Fish Bar, a traditional chippy that boasts overwhelmingly positive online reviews.

Arriving in Old Colwyn at around 4.30pm and the area is positively bustling with activity, with plenty of people out and about. “I walk into Alex’s where I receive a warm greeting despite the fact that the staff are being kept busy by a relatively large queue,” says North Wales Live journalist Thomas Lewis.

“Service is very brisk and I’m soon away with my fishcake, chips and curry sauce which set me back £6.70 along with a drink – pretty reasonable. I wander across to the nearby Wynn Gardens and take a seat on one of the benches. The food is absolutely stunning. The curry sauce is among the best I’ve ever tried, really tasty without being overpowering. The fishcake has a lovely texture to it as well, and the chips are nice and thick.

“I have been to some fantastic fish and chip shops in recent times, with Josie’s and Jones’s in the Wrexham area impressing me greatly, but I think that Alex’s is one of the best I’ve tried on the North Wales coast. Inexpensive, healthy portion sizes and tasty food – what’s not to like? I’ll definitely be back in the future and I recommend Alex’s to anyone who is ever in the area.” And the prices will leave many people in other parts of the country envious with fishcake, chips and curry sauce coming to £5.50, a can of Vimto: £1.20 and so the total was just £6.70.
