A British man who has been living in Australia has shared the one thing he’s found the most baffling about the culture – and it’s all to do with a difference in their food
It turns out our friends in Australia are more different to us than we think.
Despite being thousands of miles apart, it’s no secret that we in the UK share a sort of family bond with Australia. We speak the same language, and unlike our cousins in the US, those in Australia even spell things the same way we do. But there are some stark differences too – our seasons are flipped and even the way we see the moon is different.
But one of the most baffling differences between the UK and Australia was recently uncovered by a Brit living down under when he went to a supermarket and realised something was very wrong down the crisp aisle. Jake Kneesh posted a viral clip on TikTok in which he slammed the “marketing” in Australia – as all the crisp packets are the wrong colours.
In his video, Jake first picked up a bright red packet of Smiths crisps. This brand was first launched in the UK and is now a sub-brand of Walkers here. However, it was brought to Australia in 1932 and is still the main brand there. While we in the UK would associate red Walkers with the traditional Ready Salted flavour, Jake was stunned when he read the name on the Smiths packet – it said Chilli.
Jake faced similar confusion when he made his way over to a bright pink packet, expecting it to be Prawn Cocktail, as he found it was actually Salt & Vinegar – a colour even stranger than the blue vs green debate we have in the UK. Next up was an orange packet that is most commonly associated with Roast Chicken in the UK, but Australia has chosen it to be the shade of Barbecue flavour instead.
And it doesn’t stop there. Smiths’ version of Ready Salted, called Original, is in a dark blue packet that most Walkers fans will know as Cheese and Onion, and even other crisp brands aren’t safe. Jake was shocked to find that in Australia, the red packet of Doritos are Cheese Supreme flavour instead of Chilli Heatwave, and the bright blue packet, known in the UK as Cool Original, is Thai Sweet Chilli.
Frustrated with his findings, Jake simply ended his video by telling Australia to “get out”.
In the comments, people quickly defended the Australian colour scheme, as many said it was “rude” to call their system “wrong”. Others pointed out how bizarre it is that Walkers Cheese and Onion are blue in the UK, as neither cheese nor onions are blue in colour.
One person said: “I think people from another country need to realise that Australia and the UK are different in so many ways. Our chips are the right colours for us, and yours are right to you. It’s a bit rude to say it’s wrong.”
Another added: “Why would cheese and onion be blue? Blue is not the colour of cheese or onion, blue is the colour of the ocean, hence sea salt, and cheese is yellow.” While a third stated: “This is actually funny, I don’t know why everyone’s getting so upset lol the only thing that’s upsetting is the thought of a prawn cocktail flavoured chip.”
